I’ve seen a lot being said on regards to plagiarism on the blogverse and personally, I find the act of taking someone’s hard work and claiming it as your own, despicable.
We, the Book Lovers, had a recent email talk about the issue, because we all have our individual blogs besides BLI and cross posting does happen, so we were trying to come up with ways to make it clear that we are simply using our own texts a second time.
When I started thinking about what to write here, I realized something about myself. I actually don’t read reviews of books I haven’t read or reviewed yet because I don’t want to be influenced by someone else’s opinion and writing style in any way, shape or form.
I work hard on my reviews and opinion posts and I know a lot of bloggers do that as well, knowing that there are some blogs out there are taking advantage of us, it’s sad and it hurts.
What about you guys? What do you think about plagiarism?
Have you ever witnessed an instance of it online??
About Book Lovers Inc
It has not happened to me, but after all these posts I am a bit scared of it. Dunno why people do it, what fun is that, and to steal grrr
I’m the same as you. I won’t read reviews for a book I plan to review until after mine is finished.I don’t want my review to be influenced accidentally.
Plagiarism sucks! I didn’t realize it was happening until fellow bloggers pointed it out. I feel so bad for those effected. It never feels good having someone steal from you 🙁 While I haven’t had anyone use my reviews I did have someone use something I said about a book in an email to them as part of their review. Not much I can do about it since it was sent privately but it still stung a little. If someone snagged one of my reviews and used it I’d be livid.
@Bloddeued
it hasn't happened to me either, but i dont get it as well how can they do that. grrr =)
@Mama Bookworm
yeah, its hard to argue something like that…
I noticed today that someone is using the same idea I had for an event in January. I mean, it's not something so absurd, but it still stings, a lot! =/ oh well!
Yes it has happened to me – it happened twice when I was younger and the plagarism was blatant – in fact, it happened just recently, but I have to remind myself that you cannot copyright ideas. I found a construct that I use in all my books in another author's work. Kind of jarring. Like you with your reviews, when I'm writing romantic fiction or erotic, I make it a point to read only nonfiction so that I am not derivative. It's too easy to read another work of fiction and unconsciously pick up stuff from another author.
Yes, it can be frustrating!
