Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

A new eBook reader developed especially for textbooks, the Kno, is set for a beta program this fall according to mashable.com.  This is a heavyweight eReader at 5.5 pounds!  That’s still lighter than the textbooks it aims to replace though.

The Duke University libraries are now lending Kindles to faculty, staff and students.  I’ve also read about a public library in the US that allows Kindles to be checked out.  If you live nearby to someplace that lends Kindles and you qualify, it might be a good way to try before you buy.

The New Yorker has picked their latest “20 under 40” list of fiction authors.  I’ve only heard of one of them before.

Starting this Sunday, Kindles are going to be sold at all Target stores according to Publishers Weekly.  This seems like a really good move to me.  I’d want to actually hold one in my hand and try it out if I was thinking of buying one.

I’ve seen several tweets on twitter about June being National Audiobook Month (#JIAM).  If you are so inclined, then go listen to a book.

Starting July 5th, Borders will be selling the Aluratek Libre eBook Reader Pro for $119.99 US.  It has a 5 inch screen and a built in MP3 player.

The US Department of Justice is suing six websites that host unauthorized copies of comic books.  I’m happy to see something being done about piracy.

There is a very interesting article at eBookNewser about a company reselling eBooks like a regular used bookstore.  I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before.

Bloomberg.com is reporting that they have heard Amazon will be launching an updated Kindle eBook reader in August.  It is supposed to be thinner, but still no color screen.

Author behaving badly: The New York Times has a story about James Fogle, author of Drugstore Cowboys, being arrested for robbery in Washington state.   Gathering material for another book?

Jennifer Belle found an interesting way of promoting her latest book.  The NY Post reports that she hired forty actresses to laugh while reading her book, The Seven Year Bitch, in public.

There was a lot of news about eReaders this week so my question for today is:  What do you think of eReaders?  Like, dislike, use one daily, never used one?  Let me know.

I don't own an e-reader and probably only will buy one if there's no more books published in the old fashioned way. I love the smell, feel, sound and view of a book and would miss all that when reading e-books.

@Sullivan McPig – I'm glad that people can get either (or both) paper and eBooks. I think they both have their place. I've been using eReaders for over 10 years but I still read lots of paper books also. It's great to have a choice!

Hi, Colleen. I was one of those old school types as well. However, after my crossover horror/Christian vampire novel was published as an e-book, I had to adapt. Now I see the good in both, and the convenience of carrying potentially 1500 books in one small package. The first week that I had my Kindle, I carried it literally everywhere.
    Have a great weekend!

I've never been one to be all hung up over the look, feel, smell, etc. of books. In fact, I always disliked holding them open, and since I buy many of them at the used bookstore, they often smell kinda musty and yucky.

On the other hand, I Love, love, love my Kindle. It's really hard to explain what is so great about it to people who don't have already have a reader. I'm reading about double what I used to just because it's always with me, has about 100 books on it at any given time, and stays propped open at the same page with no effort on my part. I never read physical books any more if I can help it.

@James Garcia Jr – New gadgets are fun! Whenever I get a new eReader I tend to carry it everywhere I go too.

@JenM – Very good point about the smell of some books. I go to the library every week and some of the books smell of cigarette smoke.

I plan on getting an ereader sometime this year. Just need the budget to agree. This one, Aluratek Libre eBook Reader Pro, is looking pretty good right now. I need one that will do epub and pdf formats since that is what most of my ebooks are.
But I will never give up print books. A six day power outage a couple years ago taught me that, besides reading in bed is better with an actually book in your hand and not an electronic device.
Right now I do all my ebook reading on the laptop.

@Beth – My Sony Reader will last for a couple weeks on one charge, but it's good to have a backup plan to make sure you are never without a book! My other three dedicated eReaders all have backlit screens and I love to read in bed using any of them.

I'm enjoying all the eReader comments. It all comes down to personal preference, so once again I have to say that I'm glad there are so many choices out there.

I don't have an e-reader and always say that I'm going to get on esoon but just keep putting it off. I like the feel of having a book in my hands and I won't get that with an e-reader.

I am glad to see Borders will be selling an EReader as well. I am going to have to look at it in comparision to the others. I am thinking on trying to get one here in the future.

@Jenny N. – Try an eReader. Maybe you'll like it!

@Melissa – My favorite place for eReader comparisons is http://www.mobileread.com. They have lots of good info. The forums have a section listing the latest sales and deals on eBooks and eReaders, too. Very handy!

Colleen Thank you for the link. I am definitely going to keep that and check it out. Thanks!
