As I sit on the train everyday going to and from work, I have a unique opportunity…I witness a diverse crowd of people reading a wide range of books. Last year, it was fun to see the guys reading a book from the Twilight series (guess what, we can tell even with the dust jackets off LOL) and years ago it was the Harry Potter series…the “true adult book lovers”, to me, stuck with the original covers, not the fancy schmancy grown up ones!
So what is it about YA that captures an audience that is YA and, well, older? Off the top of my head, here’s my list of things:
Character Development ~ So much growth takes places over the teen years. At high school, you meet so many new friends & are exposed to new things, both good & bad (though I missed out on the paranormal!)
Escapism ~ well this really works for ANY book but to make it YA related…maybe you weren’t part of the ‘in’ crowd or were shy and wish you could have done something differently, now’s your chance to experience it!
Peter Pan syndrome ~ the desire to stay young, or at least to relive your youth!
HEA ~ I try to be a very optimistic person & love all things cute (MG is great for this) and happily ever after. Many YA books give that perfect ending, be it the girl gets the guy OR the godd wins over evil.
and last but not least, the swoon-worthy guys, the romance & angst! In YA it’s so subtle & gives the reader warm & fuzzy feelings
What is it about YA that draws you in?
About Book Lovers Inc
This is a question I've been asking myself for the last couple of months. I think it's a combination of escapism and HEA.
I think, for me, it's diversity – granted you see that in Adult novels as well, but – as an adult, each novel, or at least many of them I read in YA, are poignant, with an amazing drive, weather it be a paranormal YA, or a romantic comedy, I think that the consequences in YA are so much higher…think about it; When reading Raised With Wolves, one of the parts that hit me hardest was the choice that Bryn has to make between keeping herself to herself, and allowing herself to open up to The Pack, teens deal with this ALL the time, maybe not in the sense that there werewolves out there, but holding on to yourself while allowing love in and people in the pack to join into your life. It's real stuff…and last night, I stayed up till 3 AM reading Forget You, a story so real I could almost stick my head into the book and know I would have SEEN the world that was going on around Zoey; her story rung true to me for an entirely different reason.
Diversity in YA Lit. is starting, its no longer about "sugar coating" stuff, or pussy footing around the issues, writers of today's YA Lit are coming up with the hard stuff, and I for one am more than thrilled to be here…watching these authors put there hearts and souls on the line for us!
Gosh yep, I am wordy!
A Buckeye Girl ~ me too, so I finally made a post about it 🙂
Jenn ~ yes, the growth that takes place over those years provides a vast array of opportunites/perils to put characters in (some when looking back, you may want to forget about LOL).
Pretty much all of that. It's reliving a simpler time in my life where I didn't have a 9 to 5 or bills to pay or any of that. I could just be free. I love escaping to that.
All really good points. I like reliving the highschool years and I find that its a really good stress reliever.
I enjoy some YA books. Yes I admit to being a Harry Potter fan. Sometimes when reading a book the author places to much importance on relationships and sex and not enough on story development. Don't get me wrong, I like a good sex in a book, but it should be part of the story. Not added in because the author was told to, or needed to increase the word count.
And for taking the dust jackets off the books – just need to get an ereader. No one can tell what you are reading
