As a book lover and avid reader, I am quite proud to say that I have read a lot of books. I have never hid the fact that my favorite genres are Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance and that I am an absolute sucker for anything Supernatural.
However, as with addiction there is always a downside and the one that I have found after reading so many books and following over 100 book series (and adding to that daily), are the clichés.
How many times can you read about Sexy Vampires with magnetic eyes, werewolves with possessive behaviors, kick-ass heroine, the girl next door that gets caught up in the paranormal or the half-human / half-faerie (vamp, shifter, etc)?
Don’t get me wrong, I still love to read about all of the above and now and then, a book or series comes along that will have a new spin on an old tale or even one with such compelling characters and story that I don’t even care that it isn’t really reinventing the wheel. Nevertheless, there are few cliches that have me rolling my eyes and I can’t quite figure out if I’m getting Jaded and have read maybe too much (is there such a thing? hehe) or if it’s me just not being in the right mood.
Here are my Top 5 Eye-Rolling Bookish Clichés:
*in no particular order
– Tattooed and/or Motorcycle riding Men are Bad
– The Heroine is so irresistible that every men is into her
– Plot is obvious for us readers but main character seems oblivious until the end (it is understandable in books with more than one POV, not so much in first person POV)
– The sexy and mysterious vamp master
– The too possessive and overbearing ALPHA male
btw guys, by any means do I mean to generalize, as I said before, there are a lot of series and books out there that have been able to portrait any or all of the above with a certain twist or simply very well, and I still love UF and PNR… but sometimes, I do need a break.
What about you guys? Any clichés that bother you have you rolling your eyes whilst reading?
I’d love to know!
About Book Lovers Inc
I so agree with the 'The Heroine is so irresistible that every men is into her'.
I also get tired of all the strong, kickass heroine's who aparantly need to be bitchy to get it across how strong they are. I like my heroine's strong, but likeable.
YES! I agree with you!! Bitchy is bitchy and too Bitchy is NOT sexy LOL =0
Agree on all those points.
Hm, figuring out something of my own, my mind is rather blank at the moment. Well YA PNR always seem to have that eternal triangle
LOL true! all YA PN series hava a triangle… =)
I sooo agree!
I had read so many Vampire books that by Feb this year I was SICK of them.
I moved onto weres, and god forbid HUMAN stories, and now im back with my beloveds and loving it once again.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder you know.
Great post larissa. And, yes ditto on all the ones you noted.
I find the silent brooding male who his brought out of his shell by the right woman to be somewhat cliche to be honest. Sometimes it wold be nice if he just stayed silent… And, brooding. lol
lol
The dick of a guy and the female MC falling in love with him. WTF is up with that?
They're cliches for a reason: people read them. But it's all about what the author can do with it that'll grab people.
@Wings LOL
I do that too! take a break, read other genres and come back and all is good again hehe =)
@Lea
YES! i agree. sometimes the silent and brooding male was that way for a reason and should have stayed that way LOL
@Donna
LOL yep! WTF is up with that!
and that's exactly right, we do love the cliches, but they need to be done right =)
Any or all of those can irritate me at times. Luckily I have alternative reading to get away from the vamps(which I seem to get tired of faster)and others. I also like sci-fi books. They are a good way to take a break from the paranormal romance and UF.
SO TRUE!
I agree on the last two particularly. I'm more of a wolf girl so I read a lot of shifter series, but damn, every alpha just have this raw urge to claim their mate. I guess I don't mind *that* much as long as I love the plot in general and if the romance keeps me warm and happy. I think unexpected twists also help differentiate. Although I won't mind reading these cliches if I'm so desperate to read something romantic either!
@Beth
I do the same! sometimes I just take a break and go into a contemporary romance, a mystery thriller or something different =)
@Dwayne
Im a wolf girl too! and I still love the genre and there are some Alpha males that are just so swoon worthy…
a good plot means a lot, thats very true! =)
