Interview Author Devyn Quinn + Giveaway

Filed in Devyn Quinn , Interview , The Geeky Lover Posted on August 6, 2010 @ 6:00 am 38 comments

We are really happy to have author Devyn Quinn here today. Siren’s Call, the first book in her Dark Tides Series cam out this week and she is here today to talk about her new series and to celebrate her new release. Please give Devyn a warm welcome.

The Geeky Lover: Devyn, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
Devyn: I live in the scenic Southwest, though I have called several other states home. I am a huge fan of dark gothic music & shoot-’em-up action movies. But reading is my first love and I spend too much time with history books, as well as feeding my addiction for celebrity biographies. I especially enjoy reading books on Hollywood before the 1960′s and I’m crazy about Marilyn Monroe, her legend and her myth.
The Geeky Lover: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you a planner or pantser?
Devyn: A little bit of both. I usually have a rough idea where the book is going to go, outline chapters and characters, how it will start or end, etc… But there comes a time when a book begins to deviate from the path you thought you planned, and it goes somewhere else entirely.
The Geeky Lover: What do you think is the difference between a reader and a real Book Lover?
Devyn: A reader usually doesn’t have the massive book collection the real book lover does. Readers can let go of a book after one reading and never look at it again. A real book lover owns their favorites, reads them often and sometimes even takes the time to write the author a fan letter. That’s a book lover, LOL

The Geeky Lover: Tell us a bit about the world you created for your Dark Tides Series? What makes it special and unique in your eyes?
Devyn: The thing about the Dark Tides series is that it had to be created without using the established sea lore legends already in play in popular fiction. For instance, Atlantis was out. Poseidon was out. Anything touching on the original Little Mermaid legends were out because other authors were already working within these genres and the editors didn’t just want to add another Daughters of Poseidon tale to the stack already on the market. I had to dig further back and find a different twist on the mermaid and their history.

The Geeky Lover: Why did you chose mermaids as paranormal part of your novel? Are they a childhood fantasy or did you discover you interest them later?
Devyn: I actually did not think about writing mermaids until after Editor Lindsay Nouis at NAL approached my agent asking for authors who could write on a darker theme. My agent sent the note on me and asked if I would be interested in trying mermaids. Since I had always wanted to submit to NAL, I thought I would take a shot at the lore and see what I could come up with. My first submissions were sent back, mostly because I based the lore on Poseidon and Atlantis. I was told that I needed a more unique twist. I rewrote the proposal a few times with different angles. Though I wasn’t expecting to make a sale, I did hope to be able to submit other projects to NAL at a later time if they passed on the Dark Tides proposal. Imagine my surprise when my agent called to say they were offering a three book deal based on the outline and sample chapters.
The Geeky Lover: What can we expect of Siren’s Call?
Devyn: I hope that readers will find it a fun light read. It’s not meant to be taken seriously as the be all, end all of mermaid themed books. It’s just the story of a prickly mermaid, her sisters and the search for their lost heritage. I mixed some actual historical facts into the narrative, bending fact to fit fiction when necessary.
The Geeky Lover: How did you research the sea and archeology related parts of Siren’s Call?
Devyn: The internet is my friend, LOL. When I could not find it out online, I used the library. When the library didn’t have the books I needed, I usually just picked up the phone and called the destination I needed.
The Geeky Lover: Your heroine Tessa Lonike is a lighthouse keeper and a mermaid but what kind of person is she? What makes her tick?
Devyn: Tessa is prickly. She is a loner by nature and doesn’t really like or trust humans. She wants to be independent and not have to rely on others for help.
The Geeky Lover: Kenneth Randall meets Tessa for the first time in a life-threatening situation. How does he take it to be saved by a woman?
Devyn: He really doesn’t remember her, LOL. A mermaid’s lifesaving kiss is supposed to fade from a human’s memory when they are out of the water. But Kenneth retains a dim memory of the woman who saved his life, though he can’t think how she accomplished it. He revisits Little Mer Island in Port Rock Maine to find out the truth about what happened the day he went into the water.
The Geeky Lover: What else can you tell us about him?
Devyn: Kenneth is very determined and stubborn. He goes after what he wants, even if it’s a mistake. He is an honest hard working man. Once he finds out the truth about Tessa, he wants to be a part of her life. But she isn’t willing to let him in. It’s a little give and take on both their parts. He’s willing to be patient with Tessa’s bad attitude because he realizes she isn’t human.
The Geeky Lover: Will there be more books in this series?
Devyn: Siren’s Surrender will be coming out in Feb 2011. Siren’s Desire will probably appear later in 2011 or early 2012.
The Geeky Lover: What is next on your schedule? Any other books we should keep our eyes open for?
Devyn: I recently signed a three book deal with NAL for a new vampire series, with a new twist that I hope will fascinate readers.
The Geeky Lover: Now to the mean questions. We apologize in advance. Who’s your favorite character? Why?
Devyn: My favorite character is Morgan Saint Evanston from my Eternity books. He is an immortal assassin with a manic depressive’s tempter and an absolutely irreverent sense of humor where humans and their kind are concerned. He’s self-centered, selfish, and absolutely a hoot to write. Check Morgan out in Echoes of Angels, to be re-released later this year through MojoCastle Press. He also makes a hilarious cameo appearance in Sins of the Night (Kensington Books).
The Geeky Lover: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read your books?
Devyn: They’re like potato chips. You just can’t read one!
They have characters who aren’t always beautiful, rich or nice. Sometimes even the inhuman ones have human failings.
They always have a happy ending!
The Geeky Lover: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions.

I'd hate to disagree about the book lover thing, and I do admit have I more books than space, but I don't think it's a huge collection–

I love to read. I love getting my hands on a book and staying up all night with it. I do have some books I love that will never leave my collection, but I love to share my books more. I like to give them to friends so we can talk about them later, I like to trade them for a new one (I'm on a limited book budget right now), and just generally feel that a couple hundred books sitting on my shelf staring back at me is wasteful when someone else could be reading and loving them as much as me.

Just my two cents….and I love to oooh and ahhh at other people's collections….

I've read like a bajillion vampire books and after sometime that gets old, so it is nice to see something else but still within my genre of choice, urban fantasy. I've only ever read Little Mermaid in the mermaid subgenre, so looking forward to these books 🙂

I love mermaids and definitely the darker fiction, so this book is a must for me to read. I'm getting a bit burn out on the vampire, werewolf, and demon books. It's nice to have a different paranormal character in the lead role. so throw my name in the pot.

Hello!, would like to post a question.

Do you think that the 'power' of mermaids can take over the 'power' of vampires and werewolves (what with all the twilight craze)?

I love mermaids and would like to see more books about mermaids given more publicity. 🙂

    just mentioning my thoughts.

Yes, like all the others, thank you for making this giveaway open to the whole wide world! 🙂
