This week we decided to start something new in this post series. We will now each week choose our favorite covers in a genre and tell you why we chose them. It would be awesome if you could tell us which cover in this genre is your favorite and perhaps we will all find some new to us cover candies we can obsess about.
For the first week we chose Urban Fantasy and here are the covers we adore most at the moment:

Caroline’s Choice:

Caroline: The cover for Bone Crossed is one of my favorite UF ever. When I first saw it I think I stared for 2 hours. It’s gorgeous and Mercy looks amazing. The tattoos are again perfect. Seriously I would marry this cover if I could. The cover for Tempest Rising is different! When I first saw it I knew I would get it even before I read the blurb. It’s both cute and mysterious and there are a lot of little things that hint at the story. I find the little fanged heart perfect! It’s my favorite in the series, the other ones are pretty but not as good as this one. I am a huge Kelley Armstrong fan, I love this series and I couldn’t wait for Savannah’s book. I adore this cover, Savannah looks kickass! And the background is ‘witchy’. I didn’t like the ‘previous’ cover and I’m very happy they changed it for this one. It’s perfect.

Susi: Okay I completely agree about Bone Crossed. I could sit at home for hours just staring at it. I think The Mercy Thompson books are one of the only titles I don’t regret to own in Hardcover. The books are just so pretty they deserve that honor. Tempest Rising is nice but I don’t know…I always think of YA when I see it. I think it doesn’t fit the genre good. It doesn’t have a Urban Fantasy feel at all. I like the Waking The Witch cover. The arrangement and colors are perfect and I like the way she poses- it makes her so strong and independent. Awesome.
Susi’s Choice:

Caroline: Hum…ok the cover model for Three Days to Dead is very pretty and I like that her face is half-hidden. But I don’t like the big red title. The cover is mysterious and not bad at all but it looks like most UF covers out there. Now the cover for Unholy Magic is very interesting. The color is unusual and I love the model. Her tattoos look better than on the first cover, and she looks more ‘realistic’. I love the church on the background. I think it’s a great cover. Archangel’s Kiss cover is gorgeous…but I have to say that the first time I saw it I didn’t see the wings! True story…I thought she was near a Gargoyle or something lol It took me a few minutes to realize it was a pair of wings. =P I’m not a fan of her clothes but it’s not too bad. Now the background is interesting, looks like China? Ok I really need to read those books!
Susi: The first think that made me want to read Three Days to Dead was the cover and the title. Yes, I’m easy that way. I love that girl. Man I love how she’s feminine but still seems to be strong and seriously kick ass. And she’s dirty and all girls should be allowed to play in the dirt from time to time too. She is just pretty and I love the contrast to the rather dark and brooding background with the mysterious guy in it. Perhaps you noticed that I usually hate blue covers but the Unholy Magic cover is one of the prettiest covers ever. I like the font and how eerily it shines. Chess is perhaps a bit too pretty and her tattoos are all wrong but I love the way she sits there. Her hair is awesome and the overall blue makes it seem more ghostly and paranormal without making it creepy. It is a beautiful solution. I don’t think it really fits the books 100% but it’S just one of those covers you want to frame. Archangel’s Kiss is for me Urban Fantasy cover at its best. A kick ass woman in leather clothes and being on the watch for the next enemy to fight. I love her hair. I’m not a real blond girl myself but this hair is just perfect. I like the yellow background with the clouds in it. It makes it wonderful mysterious and seems to stand for the danger to come. Now I get all lyrical so me shutting up now. LOL

So which are your top 3 Urban Fantasy covers and WHY? Do you agree with our choices or is there something out there we should check out ASAP?

I love your choices, especially the ones for Patricia Briggs and Nalini Singh. Lovely, strong kick ass heroines!

@jeanette8024 Those are my absolute favorite. *g*

    Susi,

I like your choices as I've read all those books and have seen the covers up close.
I know I have to get with it and read some of Caroline's choices.

@Andrea I That's one important fact in my eyes. To see the covers in real. Some are not as good in real life (e.g. Blood Born by Linda Howard) and others are even more breathtaking in real (e.g. Three Days to Dead). Can't say why exactly but it's like that for me.

@Jeannette The covers for the Mercy Thomson series are the best. I love the one for the next book too. I think the artist, Dos Santos, is amazing. He has made a lot of gorgeous covers. You should take a look at his website, it's worth checking. =)

@Andrea I. Covers are soooooooo important. It's part of the charm of books. I love covers that are shiny or that you can feel under your fingers. I'm like a bird the shinier the better the attract me 😉

"Bone Crossed" is definitely the best cover of the Mercy Thompson series. I generally like Kelley Armstrong's covers, too. The covers of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series are above average as well.

@cories I was THIS close to putting a Dresden cover lol but I remembered that Susi didn't like the 'homeless guy' look of Harry. 😉 I do like them too, there's always details giving you hint about the story. =)

Love the cover of Bone Crossed. Another cover I've loved this year is Speelbent by Lucy A. Snyder. Really drew my attention and got me to read the blurb. Once I read the story, I could see that they really did a good job of putting elements from the story on the cover.

@Beth Oh I like that cover too! Funny you mentioned that one, It's also a cover by Daniel Dos Santos. He really is amazing

He has the sense of detail!

@cories Ohh yes I agree about the Mercy books and the Armstrong covers are nice too. Haven't looked at many Dresden covers tho.

    @pattepoilue Now it's my fault…LOL

@Beth I love Dan Dos Santos. He is my absolute cover hero. And yes I always have a Dos Santos Background on my netbook. LOL

  • Wings August 17, 2010 at 6:36 pm

omg…she's got wings!! i thought she was in a cave….I probably would have never seen that…

  • Jenny N. August 18, 2010 at 12:19 am

I really like the cover for Tempest Rising, its different and I'm a fan of the artwork. Yes it does look like it might have some YA crossover appeal. I like the Waking the Witch cover so much more than the Canadian ones. The Canadian version came out with new covers with the dark backgrounds and you really don't get a sense of what the story is about. This WTW cover shows Savannah and she looks amazing.

  • pattepoilue August 18, 2010 at 2:09 am

@Wings AH, you didn't see it either!! It took me a while before I realized that was her wings *headpalm*

@Jenny N. I think I so the Canadian version of WTW…isn't it one where she is covered in mud? LOL All the new covers for the series really suck, they don't have any link to the stories. Meh. I'm happy with my old versions lol
