We are really happy to have Inez Kelley here today. Her last novel, Coming Clean totally blew me away (you can read my rant here)  and as it seems I’m not alone. She got a womderful 4,5 stars review from RT Book Reviews for it. She is here today to talk about how she used her knowledge about men and their love for sports in Coming Clean. Stay tuned till the end of the post because you get a little snippet of the book and the chance to win your own copy. Pleas give Inez a warm welcome.

Batter up!

Baseball is the All-American pastime. What used to be only for those of the male gender has given way to All-Girl leagues and moppets with pigtails on the summer ball field. Still, it is mostly a man’s sport, with men owning the major leagues. It is a guy thing, a bonding right that appeals to male of all ages.
Little boys learn the rules early. They move from Tee-Ball to Little League, Hot stove(middle grades) to High School, college to the pros. Of course, not every boy makes it all the way through, but the love of the sport is imbedded in their genes. Approach a random American man on the street and ask him if he ever played baseball. 95% chance he has.
Even if he hasn’t played in decades, the jargon is known. He understands a home run is a good thing, a foul ball means he messed up and that third strike out is a failure. The essence of baseball has been incorporated into our language. Even in sex, the terms of the sport gauge how far a guy gets for his effort. Did she laugh at him and he struck out? Did he get to second base on the first date? If he hits third base, he has a shot of going all the way home and getting laid.
I used that knowledge to define my guys in COMING CLEAN. Grant and Cade are best friend, were fellow ballplayers all through high school. They understand the game. What they don’t understand is this growing sexual attraction between them. So they speak in terms understandable to them both-pitcher, catcher, scoring and the size of the bat.
Cade understands it more. He is bisexual and knows that with the right pitcher, every throw can be a home run. He also knows that stepping out of his safe zone and trying to steal a base is fraught with dangers. Is he willing to step off that plate and dive for home, risking the final out?
Grant is in the outfield, trying to find the ball in the sun. He’s straight. He’s MARRIED. He’s never even walked into the bi-ballpark let alone run the bases. So why does the thought of going to bat with Cade stir things in him? And can he catch whatever Cade throws at him?
Grant’s wife Vivi recognizes the longing in her husband and has long felt the pull of the tall blond her husband calls friend. But an afternoon at the ménage ballpark could be an error in her marriage. She could end up watching from the sidelines as Grant and Cade make it to the play-offs without her.
When the three get together, the game heats up and they knock that sucker clean out of the ballpark. And COMING CLEAN never felt so good…

Blurb:

Grant and Vivi Michaelson share everything in their marriage: love, commitment—and their wildest sexual desires. But their relationship is tested when Vivi admits she wants a threesome with Grant’s old friend Cade, proposing their annual trip to the lake as the perfect opportunity to fulfill her fantasy.

All three of them are aroused by the idea. Vivi and Cade have long felt a smoldering attraction to each other…and Grant and Cade have hidden an illicit desire for decades. Going through with the ménage will test their boundaries, reveal old secrets…and maybe tear them apart. After all, there might be room for Cade in bed, but is there room for a third in their marriage?

Excerpt:

“I’m so fucking confused. Give me a minute here, I want to be clear and make sure I understand. You’re saying if I take Viv to bed, you’re okay with that?”
“Not exactly. She wants both of us.”
“So what does she want? Double penetration?”
An unchecked scoff flew from his lips. “Maybe later, but not right away. She’s a little afraid of that. Besides, Vivi’s got to be in the right frame of mind for anal. A lot of liquor helps.”
“She doesn’t like it?”
“It’s not her favorite, no.”
Cade smirked, a devilish twinkle erupting in his gaze. “Well, she’s a woman. She doesn’t have a prostate. What about you? Since we’re telling secrets, do you like anal?”
“Sure, I mean, I like doing it to her. Never been on the other end though.” That could not be a blush on his face, could it? He thought he’d long outgrown those.
Cade bumped his shoulder. “Come on, Grant. You can’t tell me no one has ever fingered your ass. Not even a toy or anything?”
“Well, fingers, yeah, but no, never been any type of catcher, understand?”
“You’re missing out,” Cade teased, but it was slightly forced, a beat too jolly. “With the right pitcher, every throw is a home run.”
“I guess it would depend on the size of the bat though, wouldn’t it?
“Are we seriously talking about anal sex in baseball analogies?”
“Guess we are,” Grant chuckled. “Getting personal here, but do you prefer pitching or catching?”
For a second, Grant thought Cade wouldn’t answer. Then a private smile crinkled his eyes. “I like both but if I had to pick, I prefer catching. Does that shock you?”
“No.” It sent a ripple of lust straight to his nuts. “Doesn’t it hurt?”
“No, it doesn’t. Do yourself a favor, let Viv try something sometime. You might be surprised how good it is.”
I might. Maybe not with Vivi, but with you. “So you think you might be interested in joining us?”
Pure manly arrogance curved Cade’s mouth. “I’m interested. Just want to work out some logistics, set some boundaries so I understand where things are heading. If this happens with the three of us, tell me the rules. She doesn’t want DP. So is it you and me pleasing Viv or is it you sitting there watching, like with the tango?”
A knot of unknown longing crowded his vocal cords, and Grant put the bottle to his lips but didn’t drink. A strange sense of acceptance had seeped into him. He lowered every shield he had, embracing the thought of the new and untried. If he was going to do this, going to open that door, then he was going to do it with eyes wide open and with no hidden agendas. “She wants the three of us together…all parties involved equally.”
Golden-brown brows dropped to a shrewd evaluating level. The stare danced over Grant’s skin, and each individual hair stood and twitched at the perusal. His gut tightened in anticipation of the questions he saw forming.
“She wants you and me together?”
He nodded once and Cade sucked in a swift breath.

Hi, Inez! Did you or do you watch baseball, professional or otherwise? If you do follow MBL, what is your favorite team?

    cories119[at]yahoo.com

  • Inez Kelley September 14, 2010 at 5:44 am

Hi Cories, I don't follow any one team any more. I dated enough ball players and now attend more little League games than anything. I would rather watch baseball than football, though.

I love menage books and Coming Clean sounds great. I haven't read any m/m/f books with a sports theme and I look forward in reading this.

    Thanks,

Tracey, I can't say that the THEME is sports. It is more just something ingrained in the characters, how they think about and deal with the situations encountered. You dont HAVE to understand baseball to understand the story but yeah, they are ball players and the wordage is used by them without thought. It is normal for them.

I've always loved going to baseball games! Ever since I was young, and mostly minor league teams and more recently the Rays games. Hopefully someday soon I'll get to go to a spring training game.
