When I first started book blogging at the end of last year, I never thought I would have gotten as far as actually going overseas to attend a book conference.
Well, here I am, a Brazilian staying at a friend’s house in Upstate New York fresh out of the Authors After Dark Romance Unlimited Conference.
One of the first people I met online was author Stella Price. We became online buddies and she started talking about this conference she was organizing and right away my ears perked up and I felt like this was something I’d love to go to.
At the time I was living in Israel, but I had already started making plans. By April I had moved back to Brazil, but the plans kept on building and as fate would have it, it all turned out great.
Going to The AAD was one of the best experiences of my life. I got to meet some awesome authors, readers and fellow bloggers. Including out one and only Jojo, The Cornered Lover.
I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything and I’m already setting things in motion, so I can come again next year =)
My question to you all today is:
Have you ever gone to a Bookish event? Author signing, reading, Book Conference?
If not, Would you like to go? Why?
Thanks for reading,

I have 🙂 I went to Rom-Con earlier this year and it was a ton of fun. Met tons of authors (Christine Feehan, Jeaniene Frost, Carolyn Crane, Nicole Peeler, etc), bloggers and readers. I am going to another one in November where I will get to meet Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dakota Cassidy, Michelle Bardsley, etc that I am really excited too. Like you, I never thought I would go these events but I am sure glad that I can and do. They are wonderful!
I'd love to, but it's all too far away for me. I did go to a signing of my favourite Dutch author Midas Dekkers and not only got my book signed, but he also posed for a picture with me.
I have wanted to go to WisCon for 4 years now…..but while in school it was always during finals, and now it's too far away.
My first author book signing was completely unintentional. I just stumbled into a tiny little bookstore in Cambridge with a bunch of SF stuff in the window. As I wandered around, completely oblivious to other people, I heard this woman whispering "she's coming clooosssserrrrr, soon she will loooook at meeeeee….."
There is an independent book store in NJ that somehow gets all the big names to come for a book signing, it's called Bookends.
I've been to several of them (I live too far now so unless it's someone I'm itching to meet I won't go) and most of them have been fun. It's always nice if the author gives a little talk before the signing.
wow, Great stories!
Sullivan – I know what you mean, it's practically impossible to get my faves in Brazil… I trying to go to as many events as I can while in the US =D
For the past few years I've been to Dragon*Con which was awesome. I got to hear and see some of my favorite authors. Plus, see all of the awesome and crazy costumes was awesome. Lately, I've thought about going to either Authors After Dark or Lora Leigh's RAW. I have to admit it intimidates me a little because I really won't know anyone and I am extremely shy. Any advice for those of us who want to go but are a little nervous?
I have never been to anything like that. I would give my first born child to be able to attend one of these events. Just Kidding on the child part. lol Why? Because I am a book junkie as most of you know. I live and breath books. I think its so exciting to do a interview on my blog I couldn't imagine meeting them in person. =)
@Heather
oooh hon! You should deffinitely come to the Authors After Dark Con next year! Im 99% sure I'm coming!
I understand that it might be hard to go when you feel like you don't know anyone and you'll be out of place…
but, I really think you should take a chance… a good way to help you feel more confortable is joining the AAD Yahoo group and start interacting with people there… tahts way you start to get to know other people that are coming as well and it will make you feel better! =D
@Danielle
LOL I KNOW! I freak out whenever I get one of my fave authors to give me an interview, getting to meet them in person is a dream come true!
I've been to a couple of signings but even better have been get togethers with a couple of authors.
I've gone to a covention here in Massachusetts 3 years in a row put on by a college. It's focus is on female authors in the fantasy genre. I've gotten to meet Patty Briggs, Lynn Flewelling, and Annette Curtis Klause among others. I have met Patty 4 times now and she is a very nice lady.
I've also met Kelley Armstrong at two get togethers in Toronto; she was part of a picnic put together with members of her board.
I would love to be able to someday attend an event like ComicCon or RWA convention.
@Bea
oh WOW! you've met Patty Briggs and Kelley Armstrong?? AMAZING! they are 2 of my fave authors ever! =D
oooh I hope you cam make it to the ones you really want to someday! =D
I've only been to two author signings and they were both last year. Not too many authors come to Vancouver but I know Scott Westerfeld will be doing a signing at the end of November here so I'm excited about that.
@Larissa
Thank you for the advice! I will look into the Yahoo group. I really want to go. It would be awesome to see some of my favorite authors.
@Jenny
Thats great news! Hope you have a fabulous time!
@Heather
My Pleasure! hope you get to go and we will sure meet =)
