Today, our world tour takes us to Meiringen, Switzerland. I must admit, before looking into this area, I had never even heard of Meiringen!
When I think Switzerland, I think Geneva, mountains, skiing and just a general sense of peace. What I’ve never associated with it though is Sherlock Holmes! But, it is the famous detective that has brought me to this scenic destination, which, of course, I had to share with you.
Meiringen is the home of an apparently fantastic Sherlock Holmes museum, complete with items from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s own study and a re-enacted set up of Holmes’ environ (this is according to Graham Moore, author of The Sherlockian.)
A statue of Holmes, truly a larger than life figure in popular fiction for over a century!
The Holmes museum…it looks so quaint.
The museum in winter…I had to add one with snow 🙂
Still wondering what the connection is between Switzerland and Sherlock Holmes? It’s the Reichenbach Falls…the scene of Holmes’ demise in The Adventure of the Final Problem, or at least, so people thought for several years at the turn of the century.
With the height of the drop and the swiftness of the falls, it is no wonder so many believed that particular battle with Moriarty was the ultimate conclusion.
Not to mention the rocky base at the end of it all.
For fun, one can ride the “Reichenbach Waterfalls Ride”…though with a better ending 😉
Of course, if I ever make this trip, it would be a must to stay in a chalet.
This one totally fits my image of a Swiss retreat.
The skiing is always part of the deal when in a mountainous country.
Stunning views everywhere you look.
Ok, this just makes me want to throw out my arms, spin, and sing “The hills are alive, with the sound of music…” Tell me I not the only one that imagines doing that?
Another lovely residence.
Flowers, snow, and now, a misty day, this place would never cease to amaze, I think.
So, raise your hands if you’re even the slightest bit of a geeky Sherlock fan and have added this destination to the wish list. (My hand is firmly raised.) Hope you enjoyed todays tour!

Gorgeous photos! I love Switzerland. The first time I went, we spent time in the Murren/Grindelwald area. The second time, we went to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn and then to Lake Geneva. Hopefully there will be a third time.
Yeah, Switzerland is really beautiful. I was there last summer with my friends and we took part in a tour. I live in Hungary, which means not too far from Switzerland, but it was exhaustive to get there by bus 😛
We started in Zurich, and then we went to Bern, Genevre, Basel, Staffhausen, Lucerne and so on.
We visited a lot of spectacle and famous place, but the hills and the scenery held my attention. I loved them.
Thank you for posting about Switzerland – it brought back beautiful memories 😉
Lovely!
Wonderful photos!

I have to admit I am a Sherlock Holmes fan. Always have been. On my very first trip to London I visited the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker Street. The museum was nothing to write home about but I had fun.
Switzerland looks absolutely gorgeous! I would love to visit there.

@JenM & Mikki-Mano – I am so jealous! Switzerland has always intrigued me, now I really want to go.
@Chelsea & Estella – Thank you 🙂
@marybelle – You are very welcome. I have to figure out some way of making these trips 3D virtual, lol.
@Stacie – I think just saying you've been on Baker St. impresses me, lol.
Definitely on my travel wishlist now! Gorgeous pics 🙂

@Sarah – Thanks! Hope your wish comes true 😉
Wow, that looks great. It's definitely on my travel wishlist now. Of course I would have to find someone willing to go with me, sadly my family and friends are more into sandy beaches than mountains.
@natalie – You'll just have to convince them to go in summer 😉 I think more people like the idea of beaches to relax, but I personally like the idea of exploring.
