I have to admit, I am not a very fashionista kind of girl. I’d live in jeans and a T-Shirt if I have to, but I do like to think i have some sense of style and I do know how to dress appropriately in any given situation.
However, I’m afraid to say that, that isn’t the case of most Urban Fantasy characters, is it?
If you think about it, some UF heroes and heroines have worn pretty mind boggling outfits haven’t they?
Out of the top of my mind I can recall, Jean-Claude’s open white billowing blouse over leathers, Rachel Morgan’s white leather outfit in “Pale Demon” and we cannot forget the regular appearance of leather in UF covers, being it, black, white of full body leather outfits that defy nature.
I mean, I cannot imagine doing all that fighting in leather! Seriously, it CANNOT be comfortable! LOL
What about you?
I’d LOVE to know!
Do you agree with me? Disagree?
Are there any outfits from UF novels that come to mind?
Do you have a Favorite or a Least Favorite one?
Why?

Lol, I loved that Orbit thing.
Anyway, some have been so bad, no one would fight in high heels like that or tiny skirts and tops. And leather, creaking and stuff when you are trying to sneak up on someone?
Sheesh
It is funny how authors try to rationalize wearing leather. The heroine will say she is trying to protect skin when fighting. It would be hot and sweaty. Our military doesn't wear leather and they fight . I understand why they wear the stuff, cause it is sexy and wouldn't we all love to be able to pull that off and be bad ass at the same time .
Dear god yes, I agree – ridiculous clothes! Short skirts and high heels and corsets?! Where do you put your weapons in such an ensemble? Not to mention the ridiculousness of leather are "protection" when wearing a tank top…..so only LEGS need protection. Good to know.
I'd like to see more in the way of the "bummy" look (inexpensive jeans, basic t-shirt, efficient/not necessarily attractive shoes); besides being able to picture it better, I'd think it would make more sense. Especially when there's fight scenes or action scenes. If the author is going for "hot" and "they're rich because their job pays well" maybe they could write about high-end jeans with some special addition (rhinestones, grommets, sequins, and so on) and shirts made of "nicer" material. But what would really make my day is if the author wrote about a character in cargo pants (not only is it a cute look, you can store small stuff in the pockets) and whatever else. I love cargo pants (whether I can wear that in real life is a completely different story).
I totally agree! You'd think they would wear something more practical. But one series that doesn't completely fit the stereotype is the Greywalker books by Kat Richardson. I love those covers (Chris McGrath rocks!) and the model is always dressed in jeans, a regular shirt, and maybe a leather jacket. Very normal and practical, and the covers are still awesome without all the flashy, sexy outfits. In some of them I think she's holding a gun, but it's not over the top. I love all Chris McGrath's covers and the Greywalker ones are some of my faves!
Leather and Stray awesome boots. How these heroines are always kicking arse while in skin tight skimpy leathers and heeled awesome boots eludes me. That and half the time they can eat like a horse and still keep trimmed.
Great Post.
It's the shoes that get me every time. Does anyone else remember Riley Jenson (from author Keri Arthur) chasing a vampire while wearing wooden-healed stilettos, then using a shoe as a weapon to stab the vampire? What I find unbelievable about this scenario is that anyone can actually run in stilettos!
Loved your column. Thanks.
The UK covers of Some Girls Bite and Friday Night Bites had Merit in jeans, tank top and trainers – looking comfortable and ready for a fight – for some reason Hard Bitten and Twice Bitten has her in leather trousers and top with heeled boots!! I can't think that she made the move for comfort reasons… 🙂
I want to see kevlar clothes and steel-toed safety boots! I'm all for a black/dark brown, long leather trench coat though – fashionable and with lots of pockets for weapons.
I also love Chris McGrath's artwork especially the ones with my favorite cover model, Paul Marron.
I love the idea that you can't chase vampires while wearing heels. I could not stop laughing at this particular image.
I cannot imagine doing all that fighting in leather, it is imposible. Nobody would fight in high heels or tiny skirts and tops. Yes, she is sexy but the clothes is ridiculous if you must a fight.
You guys rock! Thanks for commenting!
Im so glad Im not alone in feeling like this LOL =D
