Today we are happy to welcome Christina Henry back at Book Lovers Inc. Black Night, book two in her Madeline Black series releases today. She brought along a little Guide about her characters composed by the more than awesome Beezle. Believe me, he’s a riot. Stay tuned till the end for your chance to win.
Hi! My name is Beezle, and I will be your incredibly handsome guide for today’s tour of important characters in BLACK NIGHT, the sequel to BLACK WINGS.
The first and most important character in the book, obviously, is me. Whenever I am in a scene I add much-needed intelligence. Maddy is no dummy, but she’s way too emotional and without me she’d end up doing even more dangerous things than she already does. Plus, without me there would never be doughnuts in the house. Maddy doesn’t consider them a priority when she’s shopping.
The second most important character is Madeline Black, Agent of death and the person that I allow to live in the house with me. Maddy inherited her job, the house and me when her mother died. She’s stubborn, sarcastic, and prone to running her mouth when in mortal peril, and she can be incredibly brave (if foolish). She has a lot of personal shortcomings, but she does buy me popcorn, so I guess I can’t complain too much.
There is a trio of men that circle around Maddy like she’s some kind of prize to be won. I could tell them that she has a terrible temper and her fashion sense leaves a lot to be desired, but nobody listens to me.
Gabriel lives downstairs, is thrall to Maddy’s father Azazel, and is completely forbidden from having a relationship of any kind due to his status as a half-nephilim. Of course, this doesn’t stop Maddy and Gabriel from making goo-goo eyes at each other when they think nobody is looking.
J.B. is Maddy’s boss, and they have just about the prickliest relationship you can imagine. If you leave them alone for five minutes they’ll start arguing over whether or not the sky is blue. For some reason J.B. finds this attractive and would like Maddy to stop making goo-goo eyes at Gabriel and start making them at him instead.
Nathaniel is Maddy’s fiancé, and he is just about as unwanted as he can be. He’s pompous and obsessed with status, and Maddy is only betrothed to him because of the dictates of her father. She spends pretty much all her spare time trying to wriggle out of the engagement, but Nathaniel is holding fast. He’s not about to pass up the opportunity to marry the heir to Azazel’s court.
Amarantha is the queen of the local faerie court, and she is trouble with a capital T. In fact, let’s just make the whole word capital letters – TROUBLE. Faeries love order and have a very rigid sense of etiquette, so they are easily offended. They’re also spoiled, selfish and vain. Maddy has been named ambassador to Amarantha’s court, Morningstar help us all. Can you imagine anyone less suited to a job that requires finesse and delicacy?
Antares is Maddy’s half-brother, born of a witch-demon named Greenwitch and Azazel, Maddy’s fallen angel father. Antares has no power of his own but is able to wield magical objects created by Greenwitch. He also hates Maddy with a passion and spends a lot of time trying to kill her. He’s sneaky, too, so he usually manages to do some damage before Maddy finds a way to escape him.
Lucifer is the first of the fallen, and nobody likes to mess with him. He’s as crafty as they come, and he always finds a way to benefit from every situation. He’s also Maddy’s great-great-great- a-bunch-more-greats grandfather, and he’s taken a shine to her. This can’t be good for Maddy, but she seems to think she can handle Lucifer. I keep trying to warn her that no one handles Lucifer except Lucifer, but will she listen to me?
Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her…
If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy’s being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves-her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer’s granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Hi Christina! Great interview, and thanks for the awesome giveaway! What do you do to get past writers block when you're stuck?
– Monica
Beezle is my fav!
Thanks for the interview and giveaway it's awesome
Hi Monica, I've actually never had writer's block yet (knock on wood). I usually have the opposite problem – too much stuff in my head, not enough time to write it!
Great post. I dont have a favorite yet as I havent read the books. But they are on my wishlist and sound great. Thanks for sharing today!!

I have to agree with Beezle – he's the most important (and funniest) character 🙂 I really enjoyed "Black Wings" and can't wait to read the second one!

Gabriel is my favorite, of course!!
Who else?

I am going with Maddy. I love her sarcastic, smart mouth which gets her in trouble. Being an agent of death she needs a tough shell.

Since I haven't had a chance to start the series yet (but it is on my wish list), I'll pick Beezle because he sounds like a wonderful character. I love those mouthy (but incredibly handsome) sidekicks in books, they're always so much fun.

Hi, Christina! I was wondering if you struggled at all with finding Lucifer's 'voice', being as how readers may have pre-conceived notions of how they think Lucifer, if he were real, would be?

Hi, Christina!
You are reincarnated as a tennis shoe, describe yourself.

I don't have a favorite as this is a new series for me! I can't wait! My question: Do you get your inspiration for your characters from people that you know or people you would like to know?
Please enter me – old follower.
Thanks for hosting.

What an interesting cast of characters. Is Beezle a cat?

Definitely like Beezle! For he is the most important character like he says!! Maddy's great too! Gotta love the heroine!
jessica(DOT)agreatread(AT)gmail(DOT)com
@Bethany – Lucifer's voice is probably the easiest to write, actually. I don't think about the way he's been portrayed in other media. I just try to think of him as my own character and go from there.
@Beverly – All of the characters in the books are completely from my own head except for one, who is loosely based on a friend at his request.
@Maureen – Beezle is actually a pocket-sized gargoyle with a popcorn addiction.
I have never read any of your books but I would like to. What other series or books have you wrote? What made you decide to be a writer? Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
I definitely want my own gargoyle.

Great interview! Loved the first book! Can't decide if I like JB or Gabriel better for Maddy 🙂
How many books are you planning for this series?
Thanks for the giveaway!
efender1@gmail.com
My favorite character is JB, because I love the prickly ones! They're always a lot of fun 🙂
I would love to win a copy of this book – I've heard SO many good things about it and I haven't read it yet!

Beezle is cute and adds comic relief, but I also like Lucifer because he has no redeeming qualities for now (and I hope stays that way).

Inuka raced across the clearing and up the hill, bright sunlight dancing off his long raven hair and beautifully tanned flesh. Long legs leapt deadfall easily and when he landed in the soft loam, barely a sound could be heard.
