Welcome to our new edition of The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me? This week destination Spain! To give you a good picture of the whole scene, we tried giving you a few covers in the same series. We’ll go from UF to Historical Romances. Let’s see how Spain fares in the Book Covers Battle! Tell us what you think 🙂
Warning: This post features dirty women, Boob attacks and plain fugly covers. You’ve been warned
The Kate Andrews series by Ilona Andrews
Caro: What really strikes me is that it’s not the same model for the 3 covers (or at least it doesn’t look like it). I really dislike the cover of the first book, she looks…dirty. That shadow close to her mouth is irking me Also what’s with the hair? and most of all…O_o…the eyebrows? I think she looks too boyish for me. On the other hand I do like the 2 other covers, my only problem is the boobies-attack of book 2. Otherwise I really love book 2’s cover. Atlanta looks so devastated..I love it! I also love how Kate is posing. What’s in Kate’s hand? A katana? Also I want to feed her. So yeah cover #2 it is for me!
Susi:So what is the boy doing on cover 1? Is that supposed to be Kate? Why is hair that short? O_o I really don’t like it. I agree with you that cover 2 looks best. But yeah her boobies are prominent to say it nice. But as you said I love the background and how they depicted Atlanta. A bit like I always imagined it. Cover 3 makes Kate look so tanned in comparison to the other 2. And she definitely needs something to eat. All these bones- poor Kate must be hungry.
Caro: Probably all Curran’s fault!!
The Fever series by KMM and the Sookie series by Charlaine Harris
Caro: The first Moning cover is too stuffed, too many things going on with the huge flowery font. It could have worked pretty well, I like the reflection in the eye, but it’s a bit too bright and colorful. I’d say it’s a meh cover for me. The second cover sticks pretty close to the original, I just wanted to point out the shoes! She’s on top of a building (or so I guess) in super thin high heels…she deserves to fall seriously. lol Miss Moning could you rewrite the book with Mac falling to her death?
Now WTF!!! Who let the kid play with her mommy’s lipstick huh? This is just fugly. First she looks like she has no hair, the red lipstick makes her look like a clown ready to kill us all while we sleep (because isn’t that what all clowns do?!!). Bleeeergh I really don’t like it at all.
Susi:First thought about the Moning cover: does she have an eye condition? But it seems it’s just the make up. And yeah it seems to be a bit too much. The make up , the font- no idea where I should look first. I think this one is pretty creepy. I actually like the second cover though. Her pose and the background are really great! And they toned the font a bit down. I approve.
The
Harris cover: Okay first I though she had blood in her face. But yeah it’s lipstick. Why is she doing this? Is she crazy? Does she do that in the book? I’m confused. and it’s fugly.
Caro: LMAO I’m pretty sure poor Sookie doesn’t spend her time doing that. We’ll just agree it’s plain fuglicious
The Hollow series by Kim Harrison
Caro: At first glance I was thinking it didn’t look much like the heroine, Rachel. Well it doesn’t, she’s not really the pouty lips kind of girl. She’s pretty natural. Now while it’s not really her, I don’t dislike the covers. They are well made and at least they match. Maybe a tad too stuffed but I do like the bottom part of the last 2 covers. I’m not sure who those men are supposed to be in the series (Kisten maybe? and David? Hard to tell). I like these covers way better than the french ones 😉
Susi: No idea what the heroine should look like but when I look at this model I think pretty little princess and not kick-ass urban fantasy heroine. I don’t much care for the arrangement of the covers. They look so clutter and unorganized. And on the second one the author name looks like she has a smudge in her face. Makes me want to rub it away. I actually like the third the most- arrangement-wise but the girl looks scary. Too white and too mean looking. And now that I focus on it: on cover one it looks like the tower is threatening the girl. Don’t come near or I will stab you. Reminds me of Hot Fuzz, that Simon Pegg movie. LOL
Caro: LOL you had to point out the tower part! Now I can’t NOT see it
The Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas and the Love By Number series by Sarah Maclean
Caro: Why did someone steal my Barbie Princess and her Carriage? Because I can assure you I had the same toys when I was a kid. This is just…too much. Too stereotypical and..yeah that sums it up nicely. I don’t like this cover but I loved the book.
The cover of Devil in Winter is much like the historical romance covers we get in France. I don’t dislike it, but it’s a bit meh. I like the colors though.
Now…I know it’ll sound strange but I really do like the cover of Sarah Maclean’s book. Why? Because the heroine is pretty mischievous and would be sneaking around without a sound. I just wished it had another font, otherwise I like it. It’s simple, it’s close to the story and her dress is yellow and pretty *g*
Susi: The first cover makes me think fairy tale story and not really historical. Okay so I haven’t read the book but is it a fairytale? O_o And it’s so pink- as you said it is a stereotypical excuse of a cover. Meh!
I agree about the colors used on cover #2 BUT the woman looks weird. Totally unreal and so sad. Poor pretty thing. I have to say I like the sound of the title though. I don’t understand much Spanish but it sounds just so sexy. *g*
I really like the idea of the Sarah MacLean cover. The pose of the woman is so cute and daring- and yes I would like to sneak in with her and find out what’s going on. But the blue font is so not fitting and just steals the show. The cover would be prettier with an appropriate color and font.

I do like the Kate covers except for the 1st cos dunno if that is a man or woman.
The 3 next buuuuu
The Harrison ones are so pretty, but yes she is pouts too much
Ok the Kleypas first is soo cheesy but cute, devil is good, the 3rd ok but I agree on the font
Winner. Kate books cos the city is a ruin, woot
And Sookie sucks.
Oh you guys should see Finnish covers, they are never good 😉
I totally thought the model on the first Kate Daniels cover was a boy!! LOL that's just not right
I agree with all your comments regarding the Kate covers….and yet they are still better than the US versions. Spain for the win!
The covers are all kind of "meh" for me. The first Harrison cover reminds me of a Kelley Armstrong novel, because of the pentagram logo.
The most interesting tidbits I read are that Susi still hasn't read Kleypas' Wallflowers series (for shame) and Caro has an unnatural fear of clowns. Thanks for sharing!
@Blodeuedd Ohhh It would be fun to feature Finnish covers! Could you give us links to websites where most people buy Finnish books or something that could help the research?
Yep that ruined Atlanta is pretty impressive, I really love it.
@Lesley D Yeah it sure isn't :/ Poor Kate. 🙁 At least it got better with the following books.
@Draconismoi The first US covers were just not good at all. Spain has the best so far I think. The UK versions had a too sweet looking Kate and the French ones are comic-style. So yep, YAY Spain 😉
@LSUReader I despair of making Susi read the Wallflowers series *sigh*. And HEY! What do you mean unnatural fear of clowns? Clowns ARE scary psychopaths! lol
@Blodeuedd Yes I loved how they depicted Atlanta. Awesome.
@Lesley I think we all did.
@draconismoi Yeah, it's but true.
@LSUReader *hides in shame* But I was good and read Lisa Kleypas this year. Perhaps I will try But they are historical. *sigh*
