Welcome to this week’s news post! I hope everyone had a great Halloween! This week brings news major developments with Amazon announcing a lending library to Prime customers and leaked details of the upcoming Nook Tablet as well as upcoming books/covers and tidbits in the world of books!
The news that has made waves over the past few days is
the announcement from Amazon about a lending library which will consist currently of 5000 books, some by bestselling popular authors to Prime customers. The lending is restricted to the hard devices like the Kindle and customers wont be to use this feature with desktop or phone apps and that only one book may be borrowed a month at a time. I think this is pretty savvy of Amazon and I suspect it is to help take away the wind off the sails of the upcoming Nook news conference on the 7th of November.
The upcoming Nook tablet announcement seems to be beaten to the post by
The Digital Reader who managed to get the leaked details of the tablet. Reading the specs, it does sound nice but it is not earth-shattering or new and the rumoured price point of being under $200 is belied with the slated price of $249. It does boast a bigger memory and processor speed but I don’t think this would excite a lot of people.
An interesting report has stated that publishers John Wylie and Sons have instigated lawsuts to 27 individuals due to their alleged use of downloading and pirating their books via Bittorrent sites. I think this is the first time a mass lawsuit of this nature has happened and I am actually quite surprised it took this look for a publisher to take this route. However whether other publishers follow suit is another matter and looking at how the music and movie industry has dealt with this issue – I don’t think they will be able to reach their main aims to put off piracy.
Another week and another option for another popular YA series for the big screen treatment!
The House of Night series by PC Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast. All nine books have been picked up by the producers of The Middlemen – however whether this will be made into a movie is something to be seen. But it looks like the hunt for the new Harry Potter and Twilight is heating up.
And now for upcoming books to watch out for!
This book has pinged my book radar and I have firmly put it on my wishlist – Masques of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin
Everything is in ruins.
A devastating plague has decimated the population. And those who are left live in fear of catching it as the city crumbles to pieces around them.
So what does Araby Worth have to live for?
Nights in the Debauchery Club, beautiful dresses, glittery make-up . . . and tantalizing ways to forget it all.
But in the depths of the club—in the depths of her own despair—Araby will find more than oblivion. She will find Will, the terribly handsome proprietor of the club. And Elliott, the wickedly smart aristocrat. Neither boy is what he seems. Both have secrets. Everyone does.
And Araby may find something not just to live for, but to fight for—no matter what it costs her.
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund is a dystopian retelling of Persuasion – I really love retelling of my favourite books and stories and this looks lush!
Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.
Eighteen-year-old Luddite Elliot North has always known her place in this caste system. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. But now the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress and threatening Luddite control; Elliot’s estate is floundering; and she’s forced to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliott wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she abandoned him.
But Elliot soon discovers her childhood friend carries a secret—-one that could change the society in which they live…or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she has lost him forever.
I love Lauren Dane covers – and Capvitated is definitely mantitlicious!
And finally the spinoff to the Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter has a cover and a blurb. I have to say the last few covers are great as well as very hawt! And it does seem that angels are the new IN for PNR right now!
From the New York Times bestselling author who brought you the Lords of the Underworld comes a dark, seductive new series featuring angels poised at the brink of destruction…
Leader of the most powerful army in the heavens, Zacharel has been deemed too dangerous, too ruthless, and if he isn’t careful, he’ll lose his wings. But this warrior with a heart of ice will not be deterred . . . until a vulnerable human tempts him with a carnal pleasure he’s never before known.
Accused of a crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller has spent four years in an institution for the criminally insane. Demons track her every move, and their king will stop at nothing to have her. Zacharel is her only hope for survival, but is the brutal angel with a touch as hot as hell her salvation—or her ultimate damnation?
So what do you think of the new Nook tablet? Is it a better option than the other tablets offered by Kobo and Amazon? And what do you think of the new lending library by Amazon? Do you think this scheme will kick off?

I REALLY want the Persuasion re.telling 😀
For Darkness Shows the Stars does sound fantastic – and I love the starry cover! 🙂
@Mel – I agree! For Darkness Shows Her Stars sounds very interesting (just what I need, another book on my wishlist)…..but I'm hoping the cover is still a rough draft. The stars are great, but she looks like a photoshop disaster. Eerily skinny. Unless food deprivation is a plot point.
I love the Masque of Red Death cover. Absolutely gorgeous.
Both of those covers are lush – but I have firmly put Darkness Shows her Stars on my wishlist too.
Loving all of these covers listed above, though for very different reasons. (Captivated = ^__^) The premise of For Darkness Shows the Stars looks very, very intriguing. I'm usually a bit wary of retellings, especially for stories I love (because the original is almost always superior, anyway). But this one looks like it's got plenty of originality of its own.
Amazon, Amazon, Amazon. I really want to rebuke you for your scary, monopoly-esque ways, but then you keep announcing offerings that really do make things easier for the individual consumer. I love to hate you and hate to love you. ^_^
I like the idea of a Kindle lending library. I'm loving being able to borrow Kindle books from my own public library here in South Texas.
Geaux Tigers!
