Blurb:
From the Journals of Sophia Noirot: A dress is a weapon. It must dazzle his eye, raise his temperature . . . and empty his purse.A blue-eyed innocent on the outside and a shark on the inside, dressmaker Sophy Noirot could sell sand to Bedouins. Selling Maison Noirot’s beautiful designs to aristocratic ladies is a little harder, especially since a recent family scandal has made an enemy of one of society’s fashion leaders. Turning scandal to the shop’s advantage requires every iota of Sophy’s manipulative skills, leaving her little patience for a big, reckless rakes like the Earl of Longmore. The gorgeous lummox can’t keep more than one idea in his head at a time, and his idea is taking off all of Sophy’s clothes.
But when Longmore’s sister, Noirot’s wealthiest, favorite customer, runs away, Sophy can’t let him bumble after her on his own. In hot pursuit with the one man who tempts her beyond reason, she finds desire has never slipped on so smoothly . . .
My Thoughts:
Last year I completely fell in love with Silk is for Seduction the first book in the Dressmakers series. I was impressed by Loretta Chase for making me love a story involving a Duke marrying a dressmaker. Not that if could never happen but well highly improbable. So it was with baited breath that I started reading Scandal Wears Satin.
Sophy Noirot is a woman with many facets. She’s a a brilliant dressmaker, or more precisely a brilliant milliner by day but she’s also a master of disguise by night when it comes to infiltrating the hottest society events. I really enjoyed this delightful character who acted and behaved more like a contemporary than the women from her time. She’s intelligent and resourceful and she is set on saving Maison Noirot. The Noirots sisters are facing scandal ever since Sophy’s sister married a Duke. His mother has become their ‘mortal enemy’ (yes I’m exaggerating) and they are losing all of their customers against their competitor. Everything becomes even more dire when their best customer disappears (sounds complicated doesn’t it?).
Harry, the Earl of Longmore finds himself needing Sophy’s help to find his sister Clara. Poor Clara was in the wrong place at the wrong time and is now engaged to a very broke Lord Adderley. To Harry’s complete dismay. When Harry realizes that his sister fled to avoid the wedding he is ready to do anything to get her back and save her from a very bleak future. Sophy and Harry must work together, Harry to save his sister and Sophy to save Maison Noirot from losing their biggest customer. The plot I concede is a bit far-fetched but it works. The dialogues had me laughing all along. Harry is really hilarious and Sophy’s independent mind and her sharp wit were a real match for Harry. The chemistry between the hero and heroine really worked for me.
I admit that the plot resolution felt a bit…easy, but I didn’t even mind. It was fun and I didn’t care that it tended to the farcical from time to time. I read it for what it was, a very entertaining story. Well it didn’t hurt that it was also pretty sexy 😉 Harry sure knows how to heat up the pages!
Scandal Wears Satin is a cute and funny historical romance with an unusual and resourceful heroine and a gaggle of hilarious secondary characters. Loretta Chase will make you accept even the most impossible situations and you’ll do with with a smile on your face.
I give Scandal Wears Satin 4 stars
I’m looking forward to this one. The first book set us up nicely for a Sophy and Harry romance.
Caro, have you read any historicals by Grace Burrowes? The first book, The Heir, was good. But the two I read recently–The Soldier and Lady Sophie’s Christmas Wish–were excellent! I recommend them to you.
I have NOT!!! Ohhhh ok I will look them up *g* Thank you for the rec! I’ve seen her books around but never tried any of them. Maybe it’s time I do *g*
Must read Chase!!

I haven’t read many books by this author but those I did read were really good.
I’ve been waiting for Sophy and Longmore’s story.
