Today we are very happy to welcome back to BLI Jessica Scott whose debut novel Because of You stunned us by being such an incredibly emotional romance story that it became a favourite read of ours (you can check out my review here). So of course we are excited that the release date of the 2nd book Until There Was You is fast approaching (mark your calendars it’s October 7th!) and Jessica even has a fantastic giveaway for you to make the wait more bearable 😉
Thanks so much for having me on Book Lovers Inc! I’m here today to talk about vices and boy do I have several.
My biggest vice is coffee. My youngest daughter came into my bedroom a few weeks ago and said “Mommy, it’s time to get up. Do you want me to go make you some coffee?” She’s five. I couldn’t help but grin and tell her thank you but Mommy would make her own coffee.
One of the things I try to give my characters is a vice. In Until There Was You, both Evan & Claire share a love of coffee so much so that Evan brings Claire Dunkin’ Donuts in the middle of a snow storm. If you’ve never had it, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is the nectar of the gods. Oh wait, I mean that about caffeine in general. That’s the soldier in me coming out.
My other writerly vice is chocolate and let me tell you there was a LOT of chocolate consumed during the writing of this book. Which is part of the reason I’m on a diet now but I digress.
I guess the reason I wanted to share about my vices is that, as my writing career grows, I think people have started putting on this veneer of who they think I am. I’m just a normal (and by normal I mean crazy) person. I’m the same person I was when I was blogging back in Iraq. Nothing has really changed that much since I’ve gotten published except that maybe I know my way around the industry a teeny bit better.
I don’t want people to think I’m something I’m not. I’m just a mom, a writer and a soldier. And that means I’ve got the same vices (okay maybe I’ve got a lot more vices than virtues but…) as everyone else. I do my best to still chat with folks on twitter and facebook because I genuinely enjoy it not because it’s something someone told me to do. But we all have vices and I’m no different than anyone else.
Here’s an excerpt from UNTIL THERE WAS YOU where Evan is helping Claire with one of her vices…sort of…
He traced his tongue over her back and urged the sheet that was tangled around them down until her back was exposed. She sighed, and he felt her legs relax. He stroked his fingertips down her ribs, lightly. Teasing.
“If waking me up without coffee is your idea of a joke, I’ll warn you, I’ve neutered men for less.” But she shifted, a tiny, subtle movement that gave him access to the warm sweetness between her thighs.
“I can make it worth your while,” he whispered, sliding his fingers over the smooth curve of her ass, skirting closer to her center and flitting away, denying them both.
“How?”
“Let’s play twenty questions.”
“Before coffee?” She sounded pained.
“Yeah.” He skimmed his fingertips along the edge of a silver-pink scar, wanting to do more than savor this slow, sexy waking. “Why did you join the army?”

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats, three dogs and two escape-artists hamsters, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She has commanded two companies, served in Germany, Korea, Fort Hood and Iraq, and been lucky not to get fired. She is a terrible cook and an even worse housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.
You can find her online at her Website / Facebook / Twitter / Goodreads
UNTIL THERE WAS YOU
Book #2 in the Coming Home series
He plays by the rules, she’s not afraid to break them. Now these two strong-willed army captains will prove that opposites attract . . .
A by-the-book captain with a West Point background, Captain Evan Loehr refuses to mix business with pleasure—except for an unguarded instance years ago when he succumbed to the deep sensuality of redheaded beauty Claire Montoya. From that moment on, though, Evan has been at odds with her, through two deployments to Iraq and back again. But when he is asked to train a team prepping for combat alongside Claire, battle-worn Evan is in for the fight of his life.
Strong, gutsy, and loyal, Captain Claire Montoya has worked hard to earn the rank on her chest. In Evan, Claire sees a rigid officer who puts the rules before everything else—including his people. When the mission forces them together, Claire soon discovers that there is more to Evan than meets the eye.
He’s more than the rank on his chest; he’s a man with dark secrets and deep longings. For all their differences, Evan and Claire share two crucial passions: their country and each other.

Thanks so much Laura! Hope you enjoy!
because of you looks really interesting. and my favorite vice is pastries..gotta love em (even if my waistline doesn’t lol)
parisfan_ca@yahoo.com
Laurie I have to avoid pastries like the plague. They make me crazy!
My vice is unsweetened Ice Tea – (and Dunkin’s makes a good ice tea!) – I am known for the sound of the ice moving in my cup as I walk down the hall! I loved that scene – AND I loved that you used Dunkin’s!
I’m a Northeast gal by heart! We have 1 Dunkin Donuts down here in Austin (that I know of) but even the donuts taste different so we don’t bother.
First, Jess is one of the coolest peole ever. Second, we share our love of coffee and chocolate but I really don’t believe either count as vices.
Jane, I love you b/c you always kick my tail when I need it, lol!
First I loved Jessica’s first book and can’t wait for the second one. Second I too have addictions coffee and chocolate. My other addiction is an occasional Vanilla Creme Dr. Pepper, if you have never had one it is amazing. Thank you for the chance to win.
Vanilla Dr Pepper?? Sounds interesting!
I really enjoyed Because of You and am looking forward to Until There was You. My favorite vice is chocolate.
Chocolate is perfection among vices, lol!
Since there aren’t any Dunkin Donut shops in Utah (I miss being back east…) I end up at Starbucks. Have to say my vice has become the Green Tea Frapuccino. My other vice is Cadbury mini chocolate eggs! Luckily they only come out at Easter time. My kids know not to raid my stash or they have to deal with Mama Bear!
oh I love Cadbury eggs! I can only eat like one at a time though because they’re so rich.
Dunkin’ Donuts is everywhere ’round here… but I don’t drink coffee, so I can’t attest to its awesomeness. They make it a wicked hot chocolate, though.
I have no idea what you’re all taking about… chocolate is absolutely not a vice! Being European, I’m a bit of a chocolate snob, but I’ve recently gotten into Mexican-style chocolate. >70% cacao, of course.
Stoked for UNTIL THERE WAS YOU! October is going to be a busy month… I guess my dissertation won’t get written, haha.
One of my friends just got me to try chocolate with pepper in it. It was so good! I didn’t expect it to be but it was fantastic!
Vices, hmmm? I’m obsessed with good, dark chocolate, of course. And then there’s Masterpiece Mystery. Can that be a vice? I cannot get enough of Sherlock, Inspector Lewis, or Case Files. I rarely watch television (no time) but will rearrange my schedule to get those shows in. Luckily, they’re seasonal….
I’ve honestly never seen Masterpiece Mystery. But yes, it can be a vice, lol!
Chocolate of course but specifically peanut butter and chocolate. I love reese pieces and peanut butter cups. So good. They can make any bad day better. Both books sound great, can’t wait to read them
Hi Jessica
Besides chocolate and coffee, which are also my vices (more chocolate than anything) I’d say ice cream!
Thanks for sharing…
Lol, great post. My vices are potato chips and tea.
Great post! My vices are ice cream and cheese cake
My vices are dark chocolate and my husband. Not together…well maybe!
One of my vices is chocolate. If it’s in the house I have to eat it.
I love flavored coffee but I especially love frappuccinos. Then there’s ice cream. I just can’t live without either.
I also share your vices of coffee and chocolate, however I can’t function with out coffee so maybe that doesn’t count 🙂 And DD is my coffe of choice. Another one is kettlecorn, sweet/salty, yum!
