Around The Bookish World: Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post! It has been an interesting one with news of Johnny Depp launching a publishing imprint, rumours of more Twilight movies/T.V series and more news in the world of publishing!

Avon Romance has announced that they will be removing DRM (Digital Rights Management) in a selection of their books this week. Readers will be able to purchase books via All Romance Ebooks where there will be DRM free although other vendors will still be restricted with DRM at the moment. But Avon Romance/HarperCollins is the next major publisher which is following Macmillan/Tor who also announced earlier this year that their books will be DRM free. I suspect and hope other major publishers follow suit with this new trend. For more info on what books are selected, Avon has set up a Facebook App that lists the books that are DRM free and will allow readers to read excerpts along with the chance to share those with your friend’s list.

And talking about HarperCollins – Johnny Depp and his production company, Infinitum Nihil has teamed up to launch a book imprint which shares the same name as his company.  The focus the of the imprint will publish books  that will have  “authentic, outspoken and visionary ideas and voices”.  This isn’t the first time production companies have teamed up with publishers to produce and publish books and movies together and it seems to be a growing trend.

I have heard rumblings that Summit/Lionsgate, the studio behind the Twilight movies has plans to produce more movies or a T.V series set in this universe. This week another report seems to lead credence to the rumours that Studio honchos are considering a movie or a T.V series which will focus on the Wolf Pack. With the final movie in the series coming out soon, it is no surprise that the studio is considering a spinnoff since this franchise has been very profitable for them.

Fans of J.R.R Tolkien rejoice! A previously unpublished epic poem based on the legend of King Arthur is slated for release next May by HarperCollins. The 200 page epic titled the The Fall of King Arthur was not expected to be published or come to light and is a pleasant surprise to fans of the author.  And here is a taster from the poem to wet your appetite!

“Arthur eastward in arms purposed
his war to wage on the wild marches,
over seas sailing to Saxon lands,
from the Roman realm ruin defending.
Thus the tides of time to turn backward
and the heathen to humble, his hope urged him,
that with harrying ships they should hunt no more
on the shining shores and shallow waters
of South Britain, booty seeking.”

News in Brief:

Anyone fancy the first chapter excerpt of the long anticipated Iced by Karen Marie Moning which comes out in a few short weeks? Well here’s your chance! You can read it here.
Samantha Young, the author of the popular self published On Dublin Street which is her first adult novel, has been picked up by Penguin. There is also plans for a sequel although there is no information on who the hero and heroine will be but congrats on her new deal because I highly recommend the book!

And now for books to watch out for!

Eeep I can’t believe that this is the final book in the Corine Solomon series. Agave’s Kiss is slated for release next Spring and I can’t wait!

In my dreams I could reset the clock, but the moment my eyes opened, I had to accept reality. Chance was gone; he’d sacrificed himself so Shannon and I could escape Sheol. We’d succeeded in raising him on Shan’s spirit radio, which meant his soul wasn’t wholly destroyed by the demon gate…

Once Corine Solomon only had the touch, the ability to read an object’s past by handling it. Then she inherited her mother’s magick and that ended up being a hell of a burden, but she wrestled the demon queen and won.

Now she’s determined to bring Chance back, but the clock is ticking; every ritual has an expiration date. Add in some debt-collecting demons, a maniacal archangel running a recruitment drive, a dear friend who’s dying of time, and well. Things have been tight before, but the situation has never been this dire or the stakes so high…

The final gamble is forever—with happily ever after on the line.

This looks great – Kim Harrington’s chilling thriller, The Dead and Buried.

A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost make this one unforgettable thriller.

Jade loves the house she’s just moved into with her family. She doesn’t even mind being the new girl at the high school: It’s a fresh start, and there’s that one guy with the dreamy blue eyes. . . . But then things begin happening. Strange, otherworldly things. Jade’s little brother claims to see a glimmering girl in his room. Jade’s jewelry gets moved around, as if by an invisible hand. Kids at school whisper behind her back like they know something she doesn’t.

Soon, Jade must face an impossible fact: that her perfect house is haunted. Haunted by a ghost who’s seeking not just vengeance, but the truth. The ghost of a girl who ruled Jade’s school — until her untimely death last year. It’s up to Jade to put the pieces together before her own life is at stake. As Jade investigates the mystery, she discovers that her new friends in town have more than a few deep, dark secrets. But is one of them a murderer?

And finally the last ever Sookie Stackhouse book, Dead Ever After cover has been unveiled this week. The book is slated for next May. It is interesting to note all of her suitors ex and current are featured but I don’t have a good feeling a TEAM Eric supporter though…

So what do you think of a new spinnoff based on the Wolf Pack for Twilight? A good idea? And do you think other major publishers will follow Tor and Avon and will go DRM free in the future?
