Today we are very excited to welcome author Lorelie Brown in celebration of her newest Historical Romance release with Samhain Publishing, Wayward One. Lorelie stops by today to answer a couple of our questions and to talk about Wayward One, a really sensual story about a wickedly sexy bad boy and a proper lady who just can’t resist him no matter how hard she tries! So, let’s welcome Lorelie and don’t forget to check at the end of the post for our giveaway details 🙂

Anna: Hi Lorelie, welcome to Book Lovers Inc! Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi Ladies! I work too hard, love watching Hoarders and Intervention and have a thing for iced skinny vanilla lattes. I also have three sons and a shih-tsu sidekick who live in California with me.

Stella: Are you a planner or pantser? Can you tell us a bit about your writing process? How do your novels come to life?

Oh, I’m a pantser. By far a pantser. I usually imagine up two characters who are about as polar opposite as I can make them (except with secret same-y bits) and make sure I know what their Big Conflict is. From there, things usually drop into place as I stack up words. Usually. Sometimes there’s major overhauls needed in the edit stage. I do not like overhauls…but I do them. *drama sigh*

Anna: What do you think is the difference between a reader and a real Book Lover?

Hmm, I’d have to say Book Lovers are the ones who get so caught up in a story that they forget to sleep, despite having to be up for work the next day. Or who toss their kids Mac & Cheese because they have to know what happens next. Who keep a paperback (or a nook or a kindle) in their purse at all times.

Stella: Your latest novel, Wayward One was published on 5 February by Samhain Publishing, congratulations! Can you tell our readers what they can expect of it? (if you’d like you could even include a teaser or a titillating few lines)

During her ten years at the prestigious Waywroth Academy, Sera Miller clung to a strict code of propriety to shield herself from rumors that she isn’t an orphan at all. She’s a bastard. Now she wishes she had never allowed her friends to talk her into snooping into the mysterious source of her tuition.

Her benefactor isn’t the unknown father she dreamed of one day meeting, but Fletcher Thomas—underworld tycoon, gambling den owner, and a man so dangerously mesmerizing that he could spark the scandal Sera has worked so hard to avoid.

Fletcher is only two steps away from leaving the life of crime he inherited from his father. First he plans to join an aboveboard railroad consortium, then claim the one thing his ill-gotten gains have kept safe all these years—Sera.

With every wicked caress, Sera fights harder to remember society’s rules and reject the painful memories his touch resurrects. Accepting Fletcher’s love means accepting her past—a risk too great for a woman who has always lived in the shadows. No matter how safe she feels in his arms.

Mini-excerpt!

“Your household is a disaster. I shall devote myself to its management as a sort of adjunct housekeeper. A tutor in the ways of propriety.”

“You’ve become a cheeky wench, haven’t you?”

He could hardly discern the shake of her head through the shadows. “No, in all honesty I’m not. There’s something about your high-handed manner that demands my response.” A faint thread of wonder wove through her voice.

Stella: Could you introduce Fletcher and Sera, hero and heroine of Wayward One to us? (can be done in police profile style: height, distinct characteristic, best quality, worst habit, etc; or have the characters introduce themselves or each other, or in any other fun and original way) (if you’d like you could even include a teaser or a titillating few lines to convey their personality)

You know that girl who runs for student council mostly because she thinks it’s the Right Thing to Do and who then makes sure that the strictest teachers are the chaperones for the school dance? Yeah. That would be Sera if she lived nowadays. Don’t worry. She loosens up…mostly because of Fletcher.

If Fletcher were in a contemporary YA, he’d be the guy who had followed in his older brother’s footsteps doing Really Naughty Things (stealing cars, even?) but who wants to turn his life around. He has plans! Lots of them.

Stella: If Wayward One were to be made into an adapted period drama, who would be your perfect cast?

Fletcher would be Daniel Craig. (My love for Daniel Craig is enduring and many faceted.)

I think Carey Mulligan might make an excellent Sera. She’s a fabulous actress, and I think she’d do Sera’s growth as a character really well. She’s played repressed & wound up in Bleak House but also undone and emotional in Shame.

Stella: Now can you tell us 3 reasons why people should read Wayward One?

Fletcher is damn hot. He and Sera do naughty things at a ball. And I need money for lattes. *wink*

Anna: Could you please summarize Wayward One for us Twitter-style (in 140 characters or less)?

In a sensual twist on Great Expectations, an orphan at a prestigious boarding school discovers her benefactor is a London crime lord.

Anna: What do you think of all those strict rules that governed the society your story is set in. Where they really necessary for the society’s progress or just a step back?

I think they’re fascinating, in a way. They were so much about window dressing! Furniture had to have little skirts around it so that you couldn’t see the legs…and human beings didn’t have legs, they had limbs! But really, when it came down to it, they had very little impact on the way people led their lives. People still did all the same things (in many of the same positions) that they do now…they just hid it. I like peeling away the rules and seeing what’s hidden underneath.

Anna: Why are bad boys, such as Fletcher, in your opinion so wickedly delicious?

It’s the excitement. Gotta be. It’s the feeling that your life will become more flashy and exciting through being associated with them. They’re the guys who’ll say “C’mon, I’m bored, let’s go for a ride on my motorcycle.” Rather than “Let’s sit down and plan our strategy for our 401k.” (Which has its own, different sort of appeal!)

Anna: Fletcher sees Sera as his personal angel. I wonder if the thought of being with her one day is what made Fletcher want so bad to become a better man.

You’re absolutely right! The thing is, when he meets the very young Sera (and Fletcher is very young as well), it’s the first time he’s met someone different. Someone who gives him the idea that there is a better life out there. He’s not sure exactly what that entails at first (it’s only much, much later that he gets the idea of marrying her) but it’s all because of Sera.

Anna: Is there any author that influenced your work?

Well I adore both Laura Kinsale and Loretta Chase. I’d read anything they wrote, even scribbles on the back of a placemat. To say they’ve influenced me feels like reaching for stars, though. I just wish I was good enough to claim they’ve had influence on me. 🙂

Stella: What is your favourite part of a romance novel to read or write? The beginning, the first meeting, first kiss, getting to know each other, first love scene, big fight, HEA, or something else?

I like the sex. I like writing the sex, I do. It’s when all the angst and drama and emotion hits this giant crescendo! Plus it’s just downright fun to write. And considering that I co-write erotic romance under the name Katie Porter, it’s probably a good thing I love that best.

Stella: You write different sub-genres of romance, is there one which is closer to your heart? Or one that you wouldn’t try your hand at?

I just love romance so much, I’m not sure there’s a sub-genre I wouldn’t try. I’ve got a contemporary romance that’s currently looking for a home. 😉 That being said, I’m not sure I’d publish in paranormal romance. I’ve taken a couple runs at it, but it hasn’t worked. I fail at world building!

Stella: What is next on your schedule? Any future plans you’d like to share with us?

The sequel to WAYWARD ONE is coming out in May: AN INDISCREET DEBUTANTE. But before that comes an April release under my Katie Porter name: HARD WAY.

After his wife demands a divorce, a frustrated fighter pilot nearly forces himself on the woman he loves, yet she’s craved his raw possessiveness for eight years. To save their marriage, they learn to trust again—including an exploration of the ultimate taboo.

In support of that, Samhain is making DOUBLE DOWN, the first in the Vegas Top Guns series, free for two weeks, starting today!! Free is awesome! It should be on all the sites like Nook and Amazon, but get it at the Samhain site for sure: http://store.samhainpublishing.com/double-down-p-6906.html

Stella: Could you share with us something, a trivia that not many people know about you?

My pen name was inspired by Robert A. Heinlein, science-fiction writer. Lorelei is the female clone of a two thousand year old man. What, that doesn’t say romance to you? 😉

About Lorelie Brown

After a semi-nomadic childhood throughout California, Lorelie Brown spent high school in Orange County before joining the US Army. After traveling the world from South Korea to Italy, she’s returned home to California. But not the cool area. She can’t afford that yet.

Lorelie has three active sons and a tiny shih-tzu who thinks he’s son number three—not four, he’s too important to be the baby. Writing romance helps her escape a house full of testosterone.

In her immense free time (hah!) Lorelie co-writes contemporary erotic romance under the name Katie Porter. You can find out more about the “Vegas Top Guns” and “Club Devant” series at www.KatiePorterBooks.com or at @MsKatiePorter. You can also contact Lorelie on Twitter @LorelieBrown.

I’m not a big believer in endless discussions about a relationship, so I love that alphas males aren’t big on talking – actions speak louder than words.
