A Feast of Souls (Araneae Nation, #2) by Hailey Edwards
Genre: paranormal romance
Release date: December 18, 2012 by Samhain Publishing

Description:

The only way to save her is to bind their souls as one.

Born with the ability to communicate with the dead, few things take Mana by surprise. But when a canis lopes into her life, announcing himself as the long-dead father of a childhood friend, she’s shocked. To make matters worse, he has a dire message that she alone can deliver.

Now Mana must face Vaughn, the male who inspired one too many girlish fantasies, and impart the spirit’s message—without acknowledging her source—so the soul can be laid to rest.

With rumors of a burgeoning clan war setting his nerves on edge, the last thing Vaughn needs is for an innocent to get caught in the crosshairs. But the woman he remembers as an awkward girl refuses to leave his side until he’s heard her out. That’s not the only change in her that calls to him. Her kindness soothes his battle-scarred soul—and he craves her in ways a warrior shouldn’t.

When they are both captured, they learn of an even greater threat. The plague devastating the southlands has come to his clan home. And his best—and only—chance to keep his people alive is the female who walks among the dead.

. . .

The holiday season is upon us, folks. Looks like the book cover dudes are leaving off the shirts and undershirts so that they can make room for the new ones they’ll get as holiday gifts. 🙂 But really, this week’s selection of releases is a bit varied, perhaps more so than one might expect right before the holidays. One thing you won’t find an overabundance of, though: holiday-themed stories. Guessing most of those drop in October, November, and early December.

New dystopian YA alert? 🙂 The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken follows Ruby, a secret telekentic, as she navigates a world that both reviles her and seeks to control here. It’s pulling in stellar reviews thus far, so it may be the next big franchise to watch.

This week, running up to Christmas, I’m really feeling epic fantasy. The Merchant of Dreams, follow-up to alternate-history epic fantasy steampunk (yeah, it’s hard to classify) The Alchemist of Souls, sounds like an excellent and wild ride that defies simple description. More epic fantasy-ish goodness can be found in the highly anticipated sequel Scent of Magic, by Maria V. Snyder. And the featured title, A Feast of Souls, is a much awaited sequel in fantasy romance series Araneae Nation. (See our dual review of book one–a fun read!).

Y’know, I wasn’t planning a trip to the book store this week…but maybe I should make a quick visit before finishing gift shopping…

. . .

Any last minute picks for the winter break? (And speaking of…) Have you ever felt the need to take a break from reading? How long did it last?

You managed to find some good ones! I have the Robin D. Owens book in my sights, but this edition is just too expensive. Will wait a year or more if necessary.
And yes, I have taken a break from reading, when just too exhausted, too busy in my head (a few weeks ago, when some collegues got fired due to the economic condition, resulting in me doing two jobs). The emotion and all was too much to be able to read. So I vegged out for the tv mostly.
It will pass, don’t worry, start slow, read a much beloved book, perhaps a childrens book, just to make you smile again.

Totally get what you mean, dude. And I’m sorry to hear that things at work have been so high stress…sounds like a double whammy there.

Sometimes, it kind of nice to escape reading, even as beloved a pasttime as it is. Reading involves all of your concentration, and (when done right) really stretches your brain’s ability to imagine, envision. I hope you’re getting some good catch-up going on the tv shows! Any faves?

I’ve watched half a season of the British housing show: Escape to the country, absolutely fell in love with it. And the next week, they stopped airing it. Grumble. Finally a daily show I want to watch, and they end it.

::looks it up:: Wow! That sounds like an awesome show. One that allows viewers to indulge the fantasy that (let’s face it) most of us have had at some point.

Looks like there a whole bunch of backlist episodes…that’d be something to get in DVD, if it were possible.

HahI see what you did there. Put a dragon romance book up there. Trying to lure me back into trying the romance. Well I will not be tricked!

    • Alisha December 18, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Twas not unintentional, shall we say. ^_^ But I also recognized that it might be *too much* on the romance end of things for your tastes. But there shall be others, trust…. 🙂

NetGalley just gave me the BEST DRAGON BOOK EVER. Well, maybe. I can’t start reading it until this weekend because I have a trial. However, it looks pretty damn awesome, and difficult to dethrone.

Said book came with a Do Not Review Until February warning. Suspiciously trusting for Corporate America. I wonder what the response is if I don’t comply?

        • Alisha December 18, 2012 at 9:49 pm

….response would likely be dispatch of said dragons, I’d imagine.

          Hope you enjoy the book!!!!

I’d be all in for epic fantasy too

    • Alisha December 18, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Si! There’s someone so magical at this time of year… maybe that’s why it’s a perfect time to tap into worlds where magic and flight of fancy is the norm.

Too many books, too little time! There are quite a few that are already on my TBR list, but Molly Harper’s “My Bluegrass Baby” is on the top of that pile!! I tend to read pretty steady but during busier seasons at work (like right now) I don’t get to read quite as much as I’d like.

    • Alisha December 18, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Hey Michele! Ooh, I hope you enjoy the Molly Harper story! This one seems a bit different from her other stuff (excepting And One More Thing, perhaps?).
