Welcome to this week’s news post! This week have news that could shake up DRM in the future with legislation that could allow unlocking in the US, Candace Bushnell’s latest book leaked online due to her email account being hacked into and more news and tidbits.

This is really interesting to note that there is an amendement in Congress right now for the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright ACT) that proposes  users to unlock devices and software from DRM restrictions for their personal use.  This could potentially affect the future of DRM especially for ebooks and with Tor and a few other major publishers starting to lean towards to offer non DRM books for certain imprints. I suspect this is the beginning of the end of DRM for ebooks which hasn’t really affected the state of piracy and Tor recently announced that their move to non DRM ebooks hasn’t caused a spike in piracy which is an argument by defendants of DRM. And if this legislation goes through it will make the issue of DRM redundant because it is expensive to maintain and add to a book.

I am not surprised by this news that Microsoft is willing to buy Nook Media from Barnes and Noble – they already own a minority stake in the platform. But if they do go ahead and buy the media content and device arm from Barnes and Noble, this will help Microsoft enter the market and compete with Google, Amazon and Apple who all have devices and media platforms offering content to consumers. This may be a good thing because Barnes and Noble has made mistakes especially with closing their platform and tablets while its competitors like Apple and Google have open ones and have gained a higher market share and this may save the Nook if Microsoft incorporates it with their own devices.

I think this is a nightmare scenario for any author, but Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell’s latest book, Killing Monica was leaked online by a hacker who also unveiled President Bush’s hobby with painting.   37 thousand words of the manuscript was posted which was taken from an email attachment which the hacker managed to gain access to her account. Bushnell  confirmed to the site The Smoking Gun that she had to battle with the hacker several times to regain access to her account and was baffled why she was targeted.

Sylvia Day has posted a very smoking hot excerpt from Entwined With You – she also confirmed there will be several more books in the Crossfire series and this will not be the final book.

And talking about awesome excerpts – Ilona and Gordon Andrews have posted a sneak snippet from their new untitled series for Avon. I SO CANNOT WAIT!

It looks like Hollywood has bitten the bug for erotic/sexy adaptations with projects like 50 Shades, and the Crossfire series which are both being currently adaptated for movies or tv series. But Blue Sky Media has picked up and is adapting Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying which is regarded to be a classic and was a huge hit in the 70s. The book focuses on a woman’s journey into her self discovery and sexuality.

No cover yet but Kelley Armstrong has a brand new YA series starting next year and the blurb has me hankering for it. Sea of Shadows is the first book in the Age of Legends series and it is slated for next April.
