Welcome to Part II of BLI’s Kink in Erotic Romance: Guilty Pleasure or Forbidden Fruit?
This week I’m going to be rambling um chatting about:
Voyeurism, Exhibitionism & Orgies…
Oh My!
To try and increase my knowledge before tackling this post I did some reading about voyeurism and exhibitionism from a clinical perspective and was surprised to discover that these fetishes fall under the psychiatric realm of paraphilias which are recurrent, intense, sexually-arousing fantasies, urges or behaviors generally involving nonhuman objects, the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one’s partner, or children or other non-consenting persons. Yikes! Hopefully in the hands of a good storyteller, we don’t find the suffering or humiliation of one’s partner or especially children in erotic romantic fiction. But the key word here is consensual.
In erotic romance, authors are at liberty to experiment and incorporate any number of kinky fetishes into the sexual relationship they develop for a novel’s primary characters. I’ve read varying degrees of voyeurism and exhibitionism in many of the erotic romances I’ve enjoyed over the years. As Mary mentioned a couple of weeks ago when we were chatting about ménage relationships one of the partners will often enjoy and become aroused watching the other partners performing intimate acts. And the partners doing the performing like being watched. I mean, lets face it, if the story involves more then two people having sex then it’s safe to say these folks likely have voyeuristic tendencies because everyone is going to be watching everyone else. lol
One of my favorite erotic romance anthologies is Jaci Burton’s, single author Wild, Wicked and Wanton, which is the story of three close friends and then men in their lives. The heroine of the third novella in the anthology, Wanton, is Callie Jameson, a young widow who has secret fantasies involving exhibitionism. She becomes involved with Jack Fellows, who helps Callie get past her inhibitions and realize these fantasies. Jack is extremely seductive and these two enjoy sexual experiences in places and circumstances where there is a possibility of being seen by others. They were doing something considered to be taboo, they could get caught….
In another of Jaci’s books, Riding Temptation, the second novel of her Wild Riders Series, special ops bikers Diaz Delgado and Jessie Matthews work undercover and infiltrate a biker gang. One of the scenes in the book involves an orgy, Diaz protects Jessie to a certain degree in that he helps her to overcome any lingering inhibitions during the experience but she discovers she is aroused by the spectacle of a large number of bikers having outdoor consensual sex. I have to say, I didn’t find the scene offensive at all, in fact Jaci penned it in such a way that it was totally hot.
I can count the number of erotic romances I’ve read that involve orgies on one hand but to my mind those scenes are all about voyeurism and exhibitionism. It’s hedonistic and wild, involving people who are completely uninhibited. One of the stories I read had a scene where ancient vampires who engaged in an epic orgy that was the equivalent of sexual gluttony. However, these guys recharged their batteries not just by taking blood but also through sexual energy. In other words, the activity was like a biological imperative. When reading about centuries old beings in an erotic paranormal romance I’ve always felt that a little (or a lot) of sexual kink seems almost natural. I mean, after all, hundreds of years of vanilla sex would get kind of boring. Wouldn’t it? lol
IMHO kink, be it voyeurism, exhibitionism or whatever, adds variety and spice to the love scenes incorporated into erotic stories. However, it has to be written in a way that engages the reader, we want to read about a special relationship which involves sensual love scenes, not just kinky sex. Bottom line? Its how the story is told. When kink, no matter what the behavior fits in in a good story then it will work for a discerning reader.
Thoughts? Opinions? Any erotic romances where the characters enjoyed voyeurism &/or exhibitionism? How about orgies? lol
In two weeks I’ll be publishing the next post in BLI’s Kink in Erotic Romance series. It will be the first of a two part conversation with author Eden Bradley about BDSM, the lifestyle and that theme in erotic romance.

ah.. this reminds me of Anita Blake series. from around book 13 (i think?? i’m not really sure since i don’t remember which scene belongs to which book) there’s plenty of group sex. did it count as voyeurism / exhibistionist? sometimes, there are 2 couples at once. the first couple is gettin’ it hot and heavy while the second couple (sometimes it’s a menage) watch and turned on then they also gettin’ it hot and heavy.
personally i’m okay with these kind of scene. as long as it didn’t focus on the sex only. i’d prefer it just a spice for the story
I can’t think of any books I’ve read involving exhibitionism or orgies. But I agree that the most important thing is how the story is told. I wouldn’t mind reading a book with these elements, but it has to be well written, romantic, and engaging, not just kinky.
The first book that popped into my head was the Anita Blake Series. All through this series Anita has been having sex with multiple partners, threesomes and more at times. I’m ok with some kink, even some BDSM as long as all partners included are ok with what’s going on.

I like reading kink. But there has to be a story.
Nice post, and I have to admit, I really don’t like erotica. But now I see the comment by Mary Kirkland, and yes, I love the Anita Blake books. I don’t mind all the various sex scenes at all in those books. Must be the author. Usually I go skipping those to get back to the story.
I read some erotica, sometimes I’m surprised by some authors whom I’ve classified as fiction and it turns out they are erotica. It depends on what you feel is very very sexually explicit.

The first book that came to mind are the books in the Sweet series by Maya Banks. Anytime the characters visit The House, vouyerism is a part of the scene. I really enjoy that aspect of the Sweet series. There is something very interesting about the idea of people willingly letting strangers watch them doing something so intimate.

This is a very interesting post. I haven’t read any books with voyeurism or exhibitionism.

I have not read any books with orgies in them. It sounds wild though.

I think most of the exhibitionism books that I have read have taken places in BDSM clubs. I can’t really think of an orgies in books, I think the most people in a scene that I have read were about 4.

I enjoy some authors that write erotica but I had a hear time thinking of ones that involve voyerism, exhibitionism. Then I read one of the above posts and I have read one of Maya Banks Sweet series, most of the books I have read are mainly menage. I will have to give jaci Burton’s books a try.
I love Jaci Burton’s books. She always comes up with some interesting scenarios. 🙂

The Doms of Darkhaven series by Cherise Sinclair centers around a BDSM club, and each of the stories has some kind of exhibitionism at the club for the main characters. It works so well with the storylines and is used to advance both the emotional and physical connection of the characters.

I can’t think of any specific titles that featured orgies or exhibitionism. I know I have read a few of them.

I have not read any books about orgies or exhibitionism. I have been wanting to thought. Tore923@aol.com
I like reading erotic romance. It is a “safe”way of being just a little kinky! But, I’ve also read some really powerful and emotional ER too so it’s not just the sexytimes. 🙂

I agree that it all depends on how kink is written. I’ve not read a lot of books on orgies or exhibitionism but those that I have were well incorporated into the story. When it is well done, it adds that extra spice and excitement without detracting from the main story.

The first book that comes to mind is Risk It by Natasha Moore from her Paolo’s Playhouse series. There is voyeurism / exhibitionism in it. Can’t think of a book with an Orgy in it. I don’t think there is anything wrong with any of this as long as all parties are on the same page.

I find that the more I read kink, the more varied my own interests become! I found my way into exploring BDSM in my real life because I found myself indentifying with the female sub heroine. Strong females who want to give up control to alleviate the load that they carry out in the world. That’s me to a T. I’m really enjoying this series of blogs. Great idea!

I’m new the genre, but I’m really enjoying reading these stories. I’m learning about BDSM and what it involves. It’s so intriguing to me, so thank you for the series of posts. lfacchini(at)tampabay(dot)rr(dot)com
I haven’t read any stories with orgies but in Mari Carr’s Sugar and Spice the heroine’s first visit to a BDSM club includes Exhibitionism and Voyeurism.

I don’t recall reading any stories that outright had Voyeurism or exhibition.
TMI note: I’ve learned over the past few years, I’m much more of an exhibitionist than I thought. I always knew Voyeurism was in there, somewhere.
I’ll go hide now.
I enjoy a good book with voyeurism and/or exhibitionism. Here a few good ones: Sweet Persuasion by Maya Banks, The King’s Pleasure by Kitty Thomas, Comfort Object by Annabel Joseph
love jaci books, ienjoy little a bit of all of them, if it fits the story and the charcters
Having been to my first dungeon, play party just last night, I can speak to the actual idea of exhibitionism and voyeurism. I didn’t play last night, but I did watch. I went with 2 new friends who I met at a class at one of the BDSM orgs here in NYC. They belong to the same Master and I watched them play. At first, I was really uncomfortable watching my friend get naked except for her undies and then get flogged. It wasn’t the flogging that I was uncomfortable with – I mean, honestly, I wanted to be flogged so who was I to say anything! It was more the nakedness in public and watching the other people watch her. I asked her later if she notices the people and she said that she zones all of it out. I was surprised at how quickly I got used to it, so at the end of the night, we were getting ready to leave and I needed to put on my street clothes. So, instead of going to the bathroom, I just slipped on my jeans and changed my dress for a shirt right out there on the main floor. And no one – That I noticed-was even looking. It’s amazing how fast this changed for me. I think part of it was how freeing it felt to not give a shite who was watching. The same way I didn’t care that I wore the shortest dress I’ve ever wonr in my life and really didn’t care…and was even hoping that someone might..just..look!
