I’ve been reading The Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst recently. Her book takes place in Newburgh, New York, which I had never heard of until picking this book up. Of course, I had to take a look and see.
According to the all-mighty Wiki, Newburgh is “located in Orange County, New York, United States, 60 miles (97 km) north of New York City, and 90 miles (140 km) south of Albany, on the Hudson River”. In researching this post, I found lots of information about Newburgh’s restoration attempts which is featured prominently in Probst’s book too. A nice little tie in, I think. So let’s take a tour and check out this quaint area:
This looks like a lovely vacation spot to visit in the summer months and I bet with those mountains close by, there would be some winters sports too. Newburgh appears to have the qualities that we would associate with a “New England town” but in the heart of New York State. It also looks like it would be a great place to live, with a lovely balance between nature and city.
What do you all think? Have any of you heard of Newburgh before? Or like me, enjoy discovering new destinations, thanks to the books we read?
And if you’re a fan of architecture too, here’s a site that is tracking some of the work in Newburgh’s revamping: Newburgh Restoration
I live 45 mintues North of Newburgh! I live in Kingston NY, the first capital of New York State. If you really want to see a nice part of NY, you should come to the Adironacks/Catskills. Newburgh is still a little too close to NYC for me.
Ah, the Catskills are on my to do list also! Thanks for the info.
Wow! This is so pretty. Had never heard of the town before. But I can definitely see why the author would choose a place like this for her story.
It’s very lovely and gives us a little better glimpse inside the book, right? 🙂
This is like a mini-vacation. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I lived in the Albany area for nearly 40 years and can definitely vouch for the beauty of the Adirondacks and the Catskills, including Newburgh. Great scenery and lots of activities to suit all.
You’re making it sound even more appealing… 😉
Lovely post again, I really enjoy those. And no, never heard or read about it before, so thank you.
Thanks, aurian! I have a lot of fun researching them.
I’ve only been to Washington, D.C. and love that city. But I would really love to explore other parts of the States and this location certainly sounds like a great place to visit. Gotta save up first!
Ditto for me. I joke with my BFF about renting an RV and touring the whole country 😀
I have read The Marriage Bargain but failed to research the location, so big thanks Jackie for the lovely pics! It is indeed a beautiful setting 🙂
Thanks, Stella! I wouldn’t mind a trip on the ferry in spring, or maybe the fall, when the leaves are changing…*sigh*
Wow, I am amazed at the wonderful research you did! And yes, the restoration at the waterfront did happen, I just took a little twist in fiction to make it shine for Nick! New Paltz is the setting I had originated Alexa’s bookstore to be. The mountains are glorious! And wait for the sequel The Marriage Trap, where the waterfront will be unveiled in all its glory!
Oooh, will that be Maggie’s tale? I’m really, really looking forward to finding out more about her. She seems like a firecracker. ^_^
Oh, right! Maggie’s story….there were some hints there that I can’t wait to see explored!
Thank you for stopping by, Jennifer! I’m glad I was able to do the area justice with my virtual tour 🙂
