Bookish Rants or Raves: Getting Stuck On Your Own Ways!

Filed in Bookish Rant or Raves , The Crazy Lover Posted on February 24, 2011 @ 12:00 pm 16 comments
 Hey Everyone! I realized something really annoying recently, I am having a really hard time starting new book or series. I have come to notice that when it comes to the series I already love, I can get right into the newest book and I usually can’t wait for it.
However, when it comes to a new series, even if it’s by an author I already really enjoy, I’m having a hard time feeling the right mood to start it =/. I realized this more recently when a lot of authors I love, started releasing new series that sound awesome and even though I have been buying those books, I can’t seem to be inclined to reading them =(
I’m starting to think I’m stuck in my ways, that I can’t deal with the new and I can only find solace in the known. It might also be that I follow so many series, my brain is rebelling against being added more worlds and characters. I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m freaking out!
I planing on forcing myself to give some new series a try, otherwise I just know, I will be missing out on some great books!

How about you guys?
Do you feel stuck sometimes?
What sort of blockage do you feel at times?
Reviewing Block?
Reading Block?
I’d LOVE to know!

    You aren't the only one. I have bought 3 or 4 books in a series and they are still sitting on the shelf. I'm not sure why I can't just dive in. I think there may be a fear of the unknown. No idea. I need to just sit down and read them already. Sometimes I think I'm afraid to start a new series and get attached just when the series comes to an end.

    I kinda have the opposite problem, I do end up reading the series but I don't like it as much as the prior series (ie. Rachel Vincent's "Shifters" series and Rachel Vincent's "Soul Screamers" series). I am sure that they are great books and everything, but I just find myself comparing them to the other series and whatnot, nitpicking every little detail here and there which makes me really dislike them.

    My issue is having the time to read new series. If I'm already well into a series and committed to it, I'll find the time to read it. But I have a few where I've read the first book and really loved it but just haven't managed to get back to it to read more of the books. Then I feel like I have to read the first one again so I remember what is going on before I keep reading.

    My issue with reading a series is that if I get into them, then I have to wait long for the next book. And by then, I have already read more books in between and have forgotten what happened. Then it frustrates me because I have to refresh my memory by re-reading the previous books. And then it frustrates me more, because I lose reading time on re-reading a book I already read. I'm thinking of kicking series away all together, at least until they are complete. This process drives me insane!!!

    I'm stuck reading the same genre. Not that I'm complaining! I love paranormal/historical romance, but for some reason I can't get my self to try UF.
    And books written in first person. Read a few, LIKED them, yet still, I shy away from them because they arnt the norm for me.

    I do get it, cos sometimes I have such a hard time starting a series. I have had the first Gena Showalter book since Aug 2009 but still haven't read it

    I sometimes have the same problem. I have a much harder time getting into new books vs series that I am already invested in.

    While I love reading from the same series from fave authors, I'm always up for something new actually. As long as it falls into my genre.

    Being an aspiring author myself, I'm going to want people to take the chance with a new author/new series someday (soon, hopefully!). I like getting into the new because I read so much of my genre I can notice the tell tale differences. I might have trouble putting those differences into words, but while reading I know how incredibly different the two books may be.

    Maybe you're not avoiding new series so much as you're bored reading the same types of books. Have you tried reading something in a different genre or some stand-alone books, so you don't have to commit to a series?

    I know my reading tastes have changed several times. There are authors I no longer read and I'm sure they're still fine, it's just me. Find something new. Look at the recommendations from the other Book Lovers in areas you typically don't follow and see if that will jump start your reading again. Good luck.

    I don't have a problem starting a new series—-or any other book.

    @Geisha

    I think I have the same fear!!! I have a bunch of series I have bought that i have yet to read =/

    @Avery

    Argh! I do the same =(((

    @Angela

    That happens to me as well =(

    @Savy

    LOL That is an awful process! It happens to me too, but I end up reading spoilerish reviews instead of re-reading the book =P

    @Chelsea

    I love 1st person POVS hehe

    and you should totally try UF… there are some with enough romance that might settle your PNR heart =D

    @Blodeuedd

    LOL I hate that! =/

    @Jennifer

    exactly!

    @Jessica

    Im glad its easier for you!

    @LSU

    hmmm Im not a big fan of standalones, but I do try different genres every once in a while so i dont get stuck in a rut =D

    @Estella

    Glad to hear it=))

  • Bea February 24, 2011 at 5:03 pm

    I find that happens to me too sometimes. I do think I get into a rut and have to break out. Reading a stand alone book can help or just taking a break for something different.

    It can be frustrating to have the long wait between books and I have also had to go and re-read the last book before starting the new one. But I can't bring myslef to wait until a series is finished before starting it either. Sigh.

    Oh, I know the feeling! I've got series started and the next book (or now bookS on a few as I can't keep up) here on the shelf to get to. I love to keep in the series but the authors are getting better at wiping those books out faster and faster for us, and I'm just not a fast enough reader to keep up with them AND the new series out too.

    Oh, it does drive me nuts from time to time. ANd remembering all the series and when they will be out and and and… ;D

  • Jackie February 25, 2011 at 12:59 am

    I try to avoid picking up or starting new series. There are few series that I've read that have made me feel like I just *had* to read all the books because they are just *that* good. Usually I get three or four books in, and my interest in the series just sort of winds down. But, then I feel obligated to finish it because I *do* want to know how it all ends. And feeling obligated to read something isn't good…

    Harry Potter is the only series I didn't feel this way about.

  • marybelle February 25, 2011 at 1:19 am

    I am wary of new series sometimes. Usually unknown authors to me. What if I am disappointed. What if I love it only to have it cease on me.

    I'm still open to new series if it's by an author I like but I find I'm less willing to start a new-to-me author if they have a huge series already started because there's so much to catch up on! And I have so many, many series that I'm already following that I don't have the energy to commit to yet another series.
