I turned on the TV one day and found the film The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus was playing. Unfortunately, it was more than halfway through already but as I was discussing The Night Circus with Mel at He Followed Me Home, I was mentioning that the premise of the book reminded me of the movie. When I started looking in Adventure literature, the subgenre of Imaginary Voyage, set today’s post in motion.
While adventure novels could be included in SciFi or Paranormal or many other genres with their content, they have a certain aspect that defines them in this category: action. For me, when I think adventure, I think pirates and the high seas. But this is only one type of adventure novel among a few variations. Let’s take a look:The Epic adventure …
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong.

I’d love to hear some feedback if you’ve won any books, either by linking through here or elsewhere in the blogosphere. It’s a great way to see what interesting books we may have missed, and of course, offer our congratulations. This week, I won The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, which has me completely psyched!

Today, I’m whisking you all away to the east coast of Canada. This entire area has always seemed to me to be such a picturesque place (except when the snow matches height with the tops of houses), that I dream of a fantastic road trip, to see all the sites. More specifically, our stop on this Explore post is Halifax.
Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. It was originally founded in 1749. A lot of early Canadian history can be discovered in this area, being a short stop from the ocean and a landing place for those coming from the old world. Though there was a former city named “Halifax”, the area is now an amalgamated muncipality. But the former name for its residents, under the previous incarnation, was “Haligonians”.
And, of course, I should mention the reason …

The question of what exactly is literary fiction has been circling around me a few times recently, and while I attempted to come up with a reasonable answer (it’s for smart people), I had to admit, I had no clue what the main difference is.
More frequently, I’ve been hearing about the loss of literary fiction reviewers/bloggers. More and more we are seeing genre fiction (also aptly named “popular fiction”) on blogging sites. I recently found this article that talks about literary authors turning to genre to sell books. So I ask: what is it about literary fiction that is making this happen?Let’s go back to my silly definition, “it’s for smart people” as a starting point. Genre fiction can sometimes also be referred to …
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much …
It’s Saturday morning, again. Our time for a little coffee (mine is already on hand) and the chance to submit the links for your international book giveaways or to enter said giveaways.
Another week has gone by and I’ve been seeing lots of new contests around the blogosphere. A lot them have been inspired by “Back to School” or the upcoming fall season. Whether either of these events is something that you’re looking forward to (or not), it’s hard not to anticipate more great books, right?

Today, we are whisking away to the sunny locale of Palm Springs, California. When I think of this area, arid temperatures, golf, spas, and the rich and famous all come to mind. What doesn’t equate with Palm Springs is vampires, which is strange when my inspiration has derived from reading Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. In the story, an alchemist is pulled into protection duty for a vampire princess and this seems the perfect spot considering no one would suspect the undead to be found in this hot, sunny city.
The book is filled with some of the references from above, with the rich students attending a private school, where Sydney Sage and the gang are hiding out. In seeing the sites of Palm Springs, I think this would be a great place to be put on assignment, regardless of …
