International Giveaways Café (10)

It

It’s Saturday morning, again. Our time for a little coffee (mine is already on hand) and the chance to submit the links to your international book giveaways or to enter said giveaways.

As the summer wanes, now is the perfect time to stock up on books to prepare for the long, cold winter ahead. It’s even better when you can win them! If you don’t have a months of snow and bitter frost to look forward to, well, there’s never really a bad time for books, is there? (And, can I come stay at your house? 😉

At Book Lovers Inc., it’s our pleasure to share the bookish love!  Good luck to everyone and hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂

As always, here’s the fine print for entering your link:Guidelines:

Book Blurb:

From the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel. Port Mortuary, the title of Patricia Cornwell’s 18th Scarpetta novel, is literally a port for the dead. In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta’s past merges with the high tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she enlisted in the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt and found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of what seemed to be vicious, racially motivated hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa. Now, more than twenty years and many career successes …

Genres 101: Today’s Lesson – Philosophical Fiction

It is getting increasingly harder to find genres we haven’t talked about yet, so for today, I had originally planned to take a look at the origins of books/literature, going back to Ancient Greece as a starting point. But in starting to look into it, I found another topic we haven’t covered yet that was, in some ways, related to novel beginnings. I decided, instead, to take a look at Philosophical Fiction and its cohorts.

Starting from that time in Ancient Greece, when dramas were performed, modern ideas of politics and philosophy were ingrained in the performances. They usually were created for the Dionysus Festivals and were a pretty big deal back then. The fact that a place was set in the theatre as an alter or seating area left specifically for Dionysus, one of the Greek Gods, shows how important the theological aspects were …

One Grave at a Time by Jeaniene Frost

The grave is one wrong step away.Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving–leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit. Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. My Wishlist: The Quirky Edition

Hi folks!

This is my first Wishlist post and I’m nervous! How do I sort out what I really want? How do I narrow this list down to something that won’t make readers fall asleep halfway through the post?

I always have pretty eclectic taste but for some reason, I seem to be stuck in a rut of vampire, werewolves, faeries and so on these days. I’m craving something different in my future reads, maybe leaning more towards literary fiction in the near future?

Well, let’s see if we can categorize my quirky picks as listed below:

Catherine the Great by Robert G. Massie

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure young German princess who traveled …

Explore This! County Meath and Loughcrew, Ireland

Today, we’re heading over to the Emerald Isle, to take a peek at an area in the North East corner of Ireland. County Meath is the home of the Loughcrew cairns, an ancient “site of megalithic burial grounds dating back to approximately 3500 and 3300 BC”. I drew my inspiration from my current read, Michelle Zink’s Circle of Fire. Lia, the main character, has to seek part of the prophecy info in this part of the world and being true to my geekish need-to-know form, I HAD to look it up! From what I read, this would be a fantastic place to explore, nevermind the rest of the beautiful country around it. Let’s take a look and tell me if you all agree:

While Stonehenge is arguably the most famous site of …

On the Book Lovers’ Shelves

Here at Book Lovers Inc., we claim to be “book lovers”. Now we’ve decided to back up those claims. We’re going to be showing off our book shelves at home to prove just how crazy adoring we are! I recently acquired two additional bookcases, so I volunteered to let you all have a peek at mine first (while they’re still relatively neat 🙂

This bookcase is in my bedroom. The top two shelves are dedicated to my review copies that I will be working on soon. Then there’s all of my Anne Rice books and various mystery/suspense books.

These are my two most recent additions. They sit on either side of the window in my kitchen. (Did I mention I live in an 840 sq. ft. apartment?) The left …

Genres 101: "It was a dark and stormy night…" (Today’s Lesson: Mystery)

As far back as I can remember, I have been a huge fan of mysteries. I mean, I always wanted to learn the rest of that story Snoopy wrote with the first line, “It was a dark and stormy night…” You just knew things were going to get good from there, right? From comics to novels, I quickly moved on in reading material but each year I still buy at least one book (ok, I’m grossly under estimating) that would be considered “Mystery”.

It’s easy to limit the category to that one title but mystery has many facets and seems to be growing in content as our world is changing. Examples of this type of novel appear in the early 1800’s but it is the master himself, the most familiar name, worldwide, that helped to …
