Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post and we have a pretty jam-packed issue! The mystery of Pottermore has been unveiled (most guesses were correct!), book news and another YA kerfuffle.

Well, most people suspected that J.K Rowling’s new mysterious site, was an online game/interactive site and is described to be ‘an online reading experience’. The interactive service will follow along the plot of the first Harry Potter book, with the 2nd book adventure sometime in the new year. The site will also host a store that will also sell audiobooks and ebooks that will be DRM free, from the Harry Potter series. There is also promise that it will also offer new content. Pottermore will go live on the 31st of July. [source:Publisher’s Weekly]

Welcome to this week’s news post! We have new book deals from favourite authors, new ereaders that will increase the competition in the market and loads more!

First up – the big news this week was the unveiling of new devices from Kobo and B&N. Both are offering similar ereading devices that are wifi enabaled and offer a virtual keyboard, and Pearl e-screen. However, the Kobo’s price is slightly cheaper going for $129 . For more info for its features click here http://www.kobobooks.com/touch_features – one of the sweetest things about the Kobo is that will cater to international languages and that may be one of the advantages compared to other e-readers.
In comparison the Nook will go for $139, for its features click here. This will definitely heat up the e-reading market and I got a funny feeling that before Christmas …

Well after last week’s bonanza of news – things are pretty quiet this week, but I have some fantastic books/covers to watch out for and a few tidbits that will please a few people.

We have a bit of an update of Trisha Telep and the Wicked Pretty Things anthology.More authors have pulled out , Brenna Yovanoff, Seanan McGuire , along with Karen Mahoney and Lesley Livingston, Lisa Mantchev and Jessica Verdey. While Melissa Marr has announced she does not want her name to be associated with this anthology in any manner to recommend it. But that is not all, authors Ann Aguirre and Saundra Mitchell have also pulled out in a different anthology again edited by Telep. I definitely think now, Wicked Pretty Things anthology wont go ahead with its current form with only 7 of …

Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

After last week’s epic news post and the authors gone HULK, things have been quite subdued this week, with some depressing and sad news of bankruptancy and deaths.

The biggest announcement has to be Borders filing for Chapter 11 insolvency and will be entering administration. Sadly 200 of their 600 megastores will be closing and around 6000 employees will face redundancies. This will also affect publishers which Borderes owes millions of dollars of debt and in turn as this article highlights will affect authors, because the majority of books being sold are via stores like Borders.

Another struggling mega store chain owner REDgroup is also facing bankruptancy, but this time its in Australia. Ironically enough they also own the Australian arm of Borders as well as, Angus and Robertson and Whitcoulls in New Zealand. This shows that traditional brick …

In the next latest twist and turns of publishing, Amazon has made overtures to agents by bypassing publishers to reach and negotiate new deals that bypasses publishers. I suspect that this is in part of the new agency agreements that is in place due to the publishers but also another move that shows Amazon is becoming more interested in publishing directly to their customers/

More shakey news from Dorchester, their chief CEO has departed John Priebich has departed the trouble-ridden publisher although a new CEO was announced to take his place. Publishers Weekly stated that Robert who was formaly CEO of Backe Marketing will take his place.

A Forrester Research study has announced that e-books will become the default format by 2015. This year’s growth of ebook sales have surpassed expectations and like I highlighted …
