Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Great news for Tolkien fans! The Hobbit movies have been greenlit by New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers and it will be filmed in New Zealand, despite previous issues with unions who had a disagreement about working conditions in the country. The movies have been dogged with problems, such as disagreements about rights and schedule clashes that led to the original director, Guillermo Del Toro who had to drop out, but led to Peter Jackson who take the helm. The two movies will be filmed back to back and will star, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.

Ang Lee is attached to the Book prize-winning book, Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It will be shot in 3D and will star an unknown in the lead role, Suraj Sharma. Shooting …

Debbie Macomber has signed up for a six book deal for Random House. The first book will be released in 2012 and will also involve audio and ebook rights as well paper/hardback print rights.
She stated that

Google is preparing the release of its UK version of Google Editions and has talked to several UK publishers to publish their books on this platform. Google has stated it would be working with the Agency model but whether this would be brought on board in the UK remains to be seen especially since Hachette is currently the only publisher that has signed up to this model.

This week, the news has been overshadowed by the sad passing of Urban Fantasy author Jennifer Rardin who sadly died this past Monday. She was the author of the Jaz Parks series, which is a high octane and fast paced Urban Fantasy series, with one of the most engaging heroines I have ever read. We from Book Lovers Inc are deeply saddened by her loss and send out our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

This week, we have news from book adaptations and upcoming releases.

But first up! if you are a fan of Neil Gaiman, you will adore this! He is appearing as himself in children’s PBS Arthur– The episode that Neil will appear in will be called “Falafelosophy,” and will feature him helping and ispiring one of the kids in writing her graphic novel.

Pan Macmillan’s Rebecca Ikin has told The Bookseller that she sees online marketing of ebooks will be very different from traditional print and that instead of 2/4 weeks of marketing it will be extended to a three month span. She told them: “There are new platforms for the e-book in a way that didn’t exist before, so our digital publishing team, our marketing team and our digital marketing team are working in an integrated way”.

Tomorrow, When the War Began based on a series of popular YA books by John Marsden has broken Australian records last weekend and which debuted in Australia. Breaking Dawn news:
Casting rumours suggest that the producers have found the girl to play Renesmee although this is all rumoured right now but the movie will start shooting this Fall and will be split into two parts.

Producers have also said that the birth scene in Breaking Dawn will be visceral and intense but wont focus on the blood but on Bella’s point of view.

Sony has just announced its new ereaders, which will be available soon. All of the new models feature new Pearl screens and will have touch screens, however they wont be as cheap as the new Kindle which I think is pretty disappointing.
