Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Random House has annouced it has a reached an agreement with the Wylie Agency after they had stated they was going to offer their client’s books directly to Amazon. Random House will instead be distributing the books under their own name – whether this agreement has a higher royalty rate remains to be seen but it looks like it is very likely and this might lead to similar deals with other authors and publishers.

Laurell K Hamilton has recently blogged about writing and what it means to her but has commented that…

“Some very successful writers don’t seem to feel that emotional connection to their work, or at least not to the degree I do. I used to envy them until I realized the price of that cool distance. They write like they feel with less depth, …

Bookish Rants or Raves: My Love/Hate Relationship with Blurbs!

I have this sort of ritual whenever I’m going to start reading a new book. I find the book on GoodReads and LibraryThing, read it’s blurb, mark as Currently Reading, add the image to my Blog Sidebar and start reading.

I have this obsession with book blurbs that cannot be healthy. Even during the book reading I tend to check back to the book’s Goodreads page and read and re-read it’s blurb.

The thing is, one of my biggest pet peeves are book blurbs that don’t match the book or have outright lies in them. I cannot stand that, it irritates me to no end and I can’t understand how publishers allow that to happen.

Sometimes it is pretty clear that whoever wrote the blurb did not read the book, and I find that a bit hard to swallow =/

All YA Love: My Favourite Series

Hey everyone! It’s YA time again. This week I will tell you my Top 3 favorite  YA series of all time… toughy, but also easy in a way. I will count this one down so that we can save the best for last ;P.

3rd Place: A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.

Whoever has read the entire series of unfortunate events (against the author’s repeated warnings) either ended up very sad, very content, or very confused. Based around the adventures of Violet, Klaus and Sunny in their constant struggle to defeat Count Olaf an evil man after their fortune. When I was a kid I actually looked up to see if the Baudelairs were real…that’s how much I loved them. But I never figured out what the question mark on the radar was …

Explore This! Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan

This week’s tour takes us to Grand Rapids, Michigan, more specifically East Grand Rapids (I couldn’t find much of a distinction pictorially, but I’m sure that those who live there know the difference) and to Holland, Michigan. My inspiration comes from reading a cute YA book called I Now Pronounce You Someone Else by Erin McCahan. Here’s a little about the book:

Eighteen-year-old Bronwen Oliver has a secret: She’s really Phoebe, the lost daughter of the loving Lilywhite family. That’s the only way to explain her image-obsessed mother; a kind but distant stepfather; and a brother with a small personality complex. Bronwen knows she must have been switched at birth, and she can’t wait to get away from her “family” for good.

Then she meets Jared Sondervan. He’s sweet, funny, everything she wants — and he has the family Bronwen has always …

Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

After making many of his publications, including The Times, Ruper Murdoch is starting up a new newspaper but only for ipads and android phones. This will also behind a paywall but the news offerings will be compatible for mobile devices, whether this will be a successful venture or not is up in the air, especially since Murdoch’s online publications have lost a large percentage of their readers since they went behind a paywall.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the leading children’s publisher has joined forces with Paramount Pictures, Participant Media and Walden Media to donate 100 thousand dollars worth of books to struggling libraries. This is to coincide with the release of Paramount’s Waiting for Superman movie which tells of a the current crisis that libraries are facing in the USA about lack of funds for getting books and …
