Elements in Lit 201: Exceptions to the Rules

I’ve finally just finished reading Sarah MacLean’s Love by Numbers series with the last installment of Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke’s Heart and I’ve discovered some recurring ideas, character, themes that bring the taste of life at that time to us, through historical romance novels.

The Regency Romance is made that much more appealing to its readers by the descriptions of the strict rules of society and of course, the main characters attempts to thumb their nose at said rules. With this in mind, I bring to you the top 6 exceptions to real Regency era rules. as portrayed in romance novels:

1- I’m bigger than you! We talked about the hierarchy of the British peerage before, but even if one character out ranks another, if they are smaller in demeanor and have done something to displease the hero of any tale, an intangible thing like rank …

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text …

Around The Bookish World: News Week-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news post! We have some breaking news about Apple’s announcement on the new ipad, new books being announced as well as books to watch out for!

Apple will be hosting a press conference to announce the new Ipad in the first week of March.  It is rumoured that it will be much faster and will have a better screen compared to its predescessors but I can’t not help feel meh on this because the leaked details aren’t that exciting. It is also assumed that after the announcement that the Ipad will be available for preorder although no release date is scheduled so far.

The UK arm of Harlequin, Mills and Boons are going to launch an e-short imprint – Mira will also follow suit and will offer e-shorts which will range around 10 thousand words in advance of full books by authors such as Victoria Fox …

Guestpost: Scottish Historical Romance by Claire Robyns + Giveaway

Today we welcome Claire Robyns to Book Lovers Inc, her latest historical romance, The Devil of Jedburgh (lookout for our review which is also going up today), released on the 6th February 2012. Claire is here today to talk about the uniqueness of historical romance revolving around Scotland! Over to you Claire…

Fiction writers make stuff up. That’s what we do. We make up people, places, names, events and faces. And then we make up families to fit our people and their lives into. Except in Scottish Historical Romance. I don’t think I’ve read a Scottish historical with a fictional clan and I’m no exception to that rule. I’ve tried, I really have, once I even got my clan map out and figured out where to squeeze my fantasy clan into… and then I just couldn’t do it.

Then again, finding the perfect clan fit for my …

Romance and Me: What’s your favourite HR time period?

Hey Everyone!

Welcome back to #2 of our Historical Romance sessions. Today we’ll discuss time periods. One of the best things about historical romance stories is that they come in all shapes and sizes i.e. set in so many different time periods. There are some set in Ancient Egypt (like Priestess of the Nile), Greece or Rome, Medieval times (all those delicious Highlander heroes *dreamy sighs*), then there are the many set in Regency/Victorian/Edwardian England with those dashing dukes and rogues, and sure there are the more modern ones set during World War I or II or later, just to name a few.

I love them all without any discrimination. I never discard a HR story based solely on the time period it is set in. I can’t pick one favourite time period I love above all the others, but there are certainly …
