Today we’re here to welcome historical novelist C.C. Humphreys to Book Lovers Inc. His guest post is on a topic that has always fascinated me, the line between realistic historical fiction and something I guess you might call historical fantasy. Not totally made up history, but history where magic sometimes happens, alongside verifiable historic events.
As it does in C.C. Humphreys’ story of war with a little magic, A Place Called Armageddon. It’s about the 1453 siege of Constantinople, a place that has always been more than a bit magical, all by itself.
Fantasy? In historical fiction?
by C.C. Humphreys
Interesting questions. It is something I have considered. And I think it comes down to what I call ‘a hammock moment’.
I was lying in my hammock – a rare and so especially wonderful laziness – and this sentence popped into my head:
“Magic happens to people who believe in magic.”
I think that is absolutely …

Of course we’re excited, we’re all hyped up on lots of yummy chocolate after reading her delightfully delicious chocolate-covered fairy tale, The Sweetest Spell (review later today). And if you’re craving a little chocolate fairy tale of your own, just answer Suzanne’s question for a chance at to win your very own copy of The Sweetest Spell!
Love + Chocolate = The Sweetest Spell
By Suzanne Selfors
How to take the fairy-tale formula of peasant girl meets prince and make it even more romantic? In my opinion, you add chocolate.
There are few things in life that stir such passion as a square of dark chocolate. I crave it. I LOVE it.
I’d …
Welcome to our new edition of The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me? This week we have a Game for you! My husband and I are trying (desperately) to buy a 1900 Victorian home just off the square in a neighboring town. I don’t think the deal will go through, unfortunately, but I’m hopeful that it will. I’m hopeful that in a few short months, we’ll be patching up walls and cleaning hundred year old floors and sleeping in a creaky house with double hung windows. When I walk in that house, I feel the history and …
Today we are happy to welcome to Book Lovers Anna Scarlett, whose latest novel Degrees of Wrong was recently released by Samhain. Anna thought you couldn’t get a better first taste of the story than by meeting the hero and heroine, so please give a warm welcome to Dr. Elyse Morgan and ship captain Nicoli Marek, and read on for an exclusive interview just for you!
Anna Scarlett: Elyse, what was your first impression of Nicoli?
ELYSE: You mean besides the one my cheek made on his chest when I crashed into him? *thinks for a second* I thought he was going to save me from Lt. Horan’s idiotic grasp. Nicoli knew I wasn’t really a cadet. But nooooo. He even let him punish me!
NICOLI: This is what I knew: You were acting as a cadet for your protection. I couldn’t figure out why the hell you would cause such a disturbance and …

I’ve done some wild and wonderful things in my life, like taking barrel racing lessons (in Portuguese) and giving birth to a child in a non-English speaking country (let’s just say that pain medication does not make …

Stella: Hi Amanda, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
Amanda: Well, I’m married. We have three grown sons, the greatest grandkids in the world, a dog, a wild house sparrow, and a tortoise. I love to read, go to movies and plays, and collect all things Star Wars, Phantom, and Beauty and the Beast. And I love to write, of course, but that’s a given.
Stella: Describe a typical day of writing? Are you a planner or pantser?
Amanda: Definitely the seat of my pants. …
