Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

There was a lot of interesting book-related news this week.   In the US and worldwide, ebook and print, we bring you links to some of the items that we found most interesting.

Bowker released statistics today showing that traditional US publishers released slightly less titles in 2009 than 2008.   They also reported a 181% increase in the number of nontraditional titles released in 2009 over their 2008 numbers.  
GalleyCat reported the list of writers that were awarded 2010 Guggenheim Fellowships. 

Israel’s largest bookstore chain, Tzomet Sfarim, removed a controversial book from their shelves after complaints from their customers, reports The Jerusalem Post.  The book, The National Left by Shmuel Hasfari and Eldad Yaniv, criticizes the settler movement.

In Spanish ebook news, Grammata will sell the Alex eReader in Spain and open a Spanish language ebookstore online in July 2010.   …

Today, I wanted to talk about historical romance literature based on Jane Austen novels that are being remade into scifi fantasy romances…

  There has been an uprising on these book titles that now include vampires, zombies and more. . .

Are they the new rage? I don’t know but I will let you be the judge after you check out a few of fantasy works of arts novels I have added to my wish list or just recently read.

Randomly Booked: Why I love my Kindle

Now that I have a Kindle I don’t need to take anything extra with me when I go on a road trip or travel around the world. I also get instant satisfaction when I buy a book. Thats my favorite part of having the kindle. I can go and travel anywhere I want and always have a good book to read. Its a wonderful new thing for people that live abroad but prefer to read in English. In Israel there are almost no good english books in the bookstores. Now i don’t have to wait for amazon to ship my books instead all i have to do is download it. 😀

I wish there was a bookstore here like Barnes and Noble or Hugendubbel English. There are not enough people here who read in English so there’s only a small …
