Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

I hope everyone enjoyed their Holiday weekend in the US! This week we have some goodies! They include some hotly awaited books and eye raising news about Amazon purchasing The Book Depository.

The week had started off with the surprising news that The Book Depository has been bought by Amazon, although the bid has been submitted to The Office of Fair Trading (the UK Government body that to oversees any breaches of trading laws) if it breaches any competition rules. Nonetheless, The Bookseller Association is not happy with this move and filed complaints to the OFT that this would increase Amazon’s monopoly in the bookselling market. However, despite this acquisition, there has been statements from execs from The Book Depository that there wont be any changes with the way things are being carried out now via their service such as …

A good girl can be bad for one night . . .

Bernadette Hogan doesn’t make mistakes. Not when it comes to caring for her mother, and not at her job protecting Texas’s most eligible—and infuriating—bachelor. So a few of my must-buy-now-books:

Genres 101: Today’s Lesson Religious Fiction

I’m not a religious person, to say the least, but this has never stopped me from reading any type of book, regardless of its designation. In fact, it often surprises me as I’m reading a new author to find a religious element within the story. The thing within my own mind, though, is the stereotype I often associate with this type of literature: the preachiness of it all. Thankfully, this is very rarely the case when we’re talking about fiction. The ‘lessons’ seem to come in a more subtle form, with the ‘human condition’ as the whole point of a story, and the associated moralities displayed through the action and characters.

So, off I went to my first stop for research (and by now, I should really know better): Wiki. This time, I found  Wiki’s …

Hammered by Kevin Hearne

Thor, the Norse god of thunder, is worse than a blowhard and a bully—he’s ruined countless lives and killed scores of innocents. After centuries, Viking vampire Leif Helgarson is ready to get his vengeance, and he’s asked his friend Atticus O’Sullivan, the last of the Druids, to help take down this Norse nightmare.

One survival strategy has worked for Atticus for more than two thousand years: stay away from the guy with the lightning bolts. But things are heating up in Atticus’s home base of Tempe, Arizona. There’s a vampire turf war brewing, and Russian demon hunters who call themselves the Hammers of God are running rampant. Despite multiple warnings and portents of dire consequences, Atticus and Leif journey to the Norse plain of Asgard, where they team up with a werewolf, a sorcerer, and an …
