Weather. It’s there. Most of the time we don’t notice it. It can be boring to talk about, and when the local news station mentions it, how many of us listen? Most of the time, we only pay half attention–until the weather begins to seriously impact …

Explore This!: New Jersey

Today we are heading States side, to visit New Jersey in all its mutli-facted character. I’ve had a few books cross my path recently that take place in Jersey, so I thought it would be neat to take a look at the landscape. “What books?” you might ask…well, I have recently given Holly Black’s Red Glove rave reviews and of course, Snooki’s A Shore Thing is out there on the shelves too.So here’s a state wide look at some of the sights you might find on a trip to New York’s neighbour.

From pretty ocean views…

..to sporting arenas, New Jersey really goes to extremes.

I get the sense of hustle bustle, when it comes to the boardwalks,
but there are obviously …

Review: Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Format Read: Trade PaperbackNumber of Pages:356Release Date:2001Publisher:Vintage CanadaFormats Available: paperback, hardcover, ebook, audioPurchasing Info: Amazon, Book Depository, Book Depository UK, Chapters

Blurb:

Yann Martel’s second novel, Life of Pi, appeared in Canada in 2001 to enthusiastic reviews and moderate sales. A year later, it came out of nowhere to win the Booker Prize and became an international publishing phenomenon (and Amazon.ca’s first blockbuster). In a wonderful display of storytelling verve, Martel takes a distinctly unpromising premise–a “story that will make you believe in God” about a boy trapped on a lifeboat with an enormous tiger–and pulls it off with complete and winning confidence.

My thoughts:

Life of Pi by Yann Martel is a book I’ve had sitting on my shelf for over a year, just waiting to be read (I purchased it that long …

And the winners this week are…

Hey Everyone!

After a horribly busy week (stressful days at work and getting home only well after 9pm each night) and disgusting icy windy, gray and rainy November weather I really anticipated the weekend, and it is wonderful! The sun is brilliantly shining, finally it is getting warmer and the garden is full of flowers blossoming, seems spring has finally come! Yay!

My little sister is also home, so I made the most of our time together and had lots of programs with her 🙂 Yesterday we went to the theatre and saw the musical “Cabaret”, it was done fantastically! We had a blast 😀

I hope your weekend is just as good as mine and you are finally getting some rest after the stressful week 🙂So let’s get down to business: congratulations to today’s winners, who are …

Around the Bookish World: News Week-in-Review

Well this week we have had some interesting developments with Amazon and some goodies with new covers and blurbage from long awaited books!

First up – Amazon is going to offer a new Kindle that will be cheaper than the current Wifi/3G models the Kindle will be around $114 which is $25 cheaper. But to make up with the lower price it will host ads in the screensaver mode or at the homepage. They have stated that the ads wont be intrusive and will hope to reach a wider audience with a cheaper price. Now I am not sure about this because I am not a fan of ads even if is on a standby mode and I am not sure if this will catch on because its only 25 dollars cheaper but who knows!

February wasn’t a …

Guest Post: Kick-Ass Sci-Fi Heroines by Zoë Archer + Giveaway

We are very happy to welcome Zoë Archer here at Book Lovers Inc today. Her latest novel, Collision Course was just released and today she will tell us about some kick-ass science fiction heroines. Be sure to stay tuned till the end for your chance to win.

Yesterday on this blog, we talked about science fiction, its different subgenres, and the commonalities and differences between them. It’s a very expansive genre, open to many kinds of interpretation, which is why many authors (myself included) find it not just alluring, but fun.

For me, one of the major appeals of writing science fiction romance is the heroines. Sci-fi heroines are a breed unto themselves. Because they often exist in a different society or a time set in the future, sci-fi heroines are usually as strong as the men, if not …

Genres 101: Today’s Lesson "Science Fiction"

Today, we’ll finally take a look at Science Fiction. We talked before about the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy, with Sci-Fi being more firmly based on logic and what is plausibly believable. While Wiki says science fiction dates back from at least the 2nd century, with roots in mythology, it’s easy to understand that as our world has become increasingly technical, the fictional representations and future prospects have been opened up exponentially to authors.

This is a genre chock full of famous names: H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Mary Shelley, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov. And that’s only a drop in the bucket! It is also just the jumping off point for the many sub-genres that can be said as having certain characteristics of Sci-Fi, but with various other elements. Punk was a major …
